Salutations to Her, for whom the creation of the universe

is only a play.

LS-281-unmeShanimiShotpannavipannabhuvanAvalyai namaH

The series of worlds arise and disappear with the opening

and shutting of Her eyes.

From SaubhagyaBhaskara:

Since the eyes of Devi never close the expression "opening and

shutting" refer to the influence of the destiny of beings, or to

her mere wish. The Ajnavatara says, "By her mere wish the whole

universe appears and disappears. The creation of the supreme

is simply the expression of His wish." Kalidasa also says, " The

universe consisting of the seer, the seen and the seeingwith all

its parts, existed in you before you thought(of creation). At

the manifestation of the universe at your will, your eyes open,

at the destruction of the universe(at your will) your eyes shut."

Gorakshanatha in his Maharthamanjari says, "The moment occupied

by the Highest Teacher in the creation is the same as that

occupied in the destruction of the universe."

(Highest Teacher? Adinatha -Shiva?)

Jnananandiya:

Due to the opening and shutting of the eyelids of ParaShakti

crores of universes are created. Since the eyelids of devatas

dont flutter, this is supposed to mean that, by their

mere wish, srishti, stithi and laya happen.

From Sridhar and Ravi's posting:

She whose desire created millions of universes.

"anDa" here denote Universe. "koTi" means a crore (10 millions). HER

desire created millions of Universes. The plularity here implies

universes created in the past, present and future.

"tadaikShata bahusyAM prajAyeya" [chandogya upaniShad 6-2-3]. He saw

(and desired) to become many and create. IkShAm chakre - He saw.

"AtmA vA idam eka agra eva AsIt nAnyat k.inchanamiShat sa EkSata

lokAnnu sR^ja | iti sa imAn lokA nasR^jata" [aitAreya upaniShad 1-1].

In the beginning there was only AtmA. There was no other agency. He

sa (desired) and created them. These shR^itis indicate that brahman

being both material and efficient cause, without an other aid,

created all this which is inseparable from Him. Just as the spider

weaves the web out of its own body. This is also stated in the

"prakR^itishcha pratij~nAdR^iShTantAnuparodhAt" [brahma sUtra 2-4-23]

For the pot, potter is the efficient cause (nimitta) and clay is the

material cause (upadAna). But in the case of jagat, brahman is the

nimitta and upadAna kAraNa.

Thanks to Shri Ganapathyji for his comments.

Unless otherwise stated, LS meanings are from R.A.Sastry's

translation of SaubhagyaBhaskara.

Who formed the world systems as it were in sport.

That is without effort. Along with other things SB says, "O mother,

the regulation of the universe is but sport to you." The Sakti

(Sutra), "She manifests the universe at will in Herself."

Jnananandiya:All Brahmandas are there only for Her vilasa(play).

Paramatma's Iccha Shakti is SriDevi. Just by means of Her sankalpa,

without any effort, in a kshana, She can create crores of Brahmanda-

s. Such creation of all these uinverses is only for Her play, and

neither at the behest of anything or any other being, nor for any

other purpose(other than vilasa).

kshana- any instantaneous point of time , instant , twinkling of an

eye , moment.

Jnananandiya: Sri JnananandaNatha's bhasya "Parimalam" for LS in

Telugu. Also the author of well known Sarada Chatusshati.

SB: SaubhagyaBhaskara from now.

Thank you for the reference. Any errors in Shri Jnanananda's bhasya

will be due to my mistranslation.
