While partially reading the Guru Charithram of “ DATTA Guru” I happened to read

the 31St Chapter- page 151 of this book that talks of “ RUDRAKSHA MAHATMEYAM “

Sri Mukam to this book has been given by Mahaswamy , published in the year 1953.

Excerpts -- from its Contents.

The discussions go in the form of a dialogue between the guru and sishaya.

The Pathivrtha devotee questions the Guru – yesterday when I was very sad a Yeti

happened to come to my house and gave me 4 Rudrakshas and asked me to wear two

for the ears and two over the neck. Can you Pl reveal the powers of Rudraksha

requests the lady to the Guru Sri Narashimha Saraswathi. ( This CONFIRMS THAT

THERE IS NO BAR FOR WOMAN TO WEAR ‘R’ )

The Guru smiles and informs that it was He - who appeared as yeti yesterday and

lectures on R as under.

R worn knowingly or unknowingly prevents any commitment of sins.

All Varnas Can wear R and there is No bar to it.

The devas worship as Rudra , the one who wears R as a garland with1000 R (S)

beads.

You can wear 16 tied to each Bhujas, one in Shika, twenty four in the hands,

thirty two in the neck, twenty four in the masthaka, twelve on the ears or one

hundred eight on your neck when one becomes the Rudra Putra.

The R studded with gold, silver, or combined and studded with pearls, spatika or

other precious stones bring additional benefits.

A devotee who does Japa, Meditation and other Anushtanams wearing R is immensely

blessed.

A person wastes his birth if he does not wear R and Tripunda ( holy ashes )

A person wearing either R mala or who keeps it on his head and takes a bath gets

the benefit of Ganga Snana.

When Abhisheka is done to R with Sri Rudram it is equivalent that of a Linga

Puja.

R is capable of bestowing the four pursharthas.

The chapter further describes the details of the story as told by the Sage

Parasara to the king Bhadra Sena of Kashmir .

The story is very detailed but briefly it is about a rich prostitute wearing a

Rudraksha Mala sacredly, considers herself as always Chaste in spite of the

society rebuking her. It culminates in lord Parameshwara himself coming as Vysya

(a client ) with a Shiva linga and in consideration of giving that Shivalinga to

her, she consents to be a faithful wife of Vysya for three days. On the third

day the entire palace with shivalinga gets burnt.

Witnessing this incident in horror, the Vysya jumps into the fire. Immediately

the unchaste woman also jumps on to fire proving her thought of being a

Pathivratha or chaste woman. Then Lord Shiva appears with Uma to give her

Mokasha.
