In general stotras dont require any initiation to say. Only some stotras which are divine in origin like Lalita Sahasranama, or Trishati require special qualifications. If there is a restriction on any stotra it will be generally mentioned in the phala shruti or sometimes maybe in a prologue to that stotra. Mahishasura mardini stotram doesnt require any initiation to chant like many other stotras. Ganesha: That story occurs in Shiva Purana. I read somewhere that Parvati tanaya-Ganesha is an avatara of MahaGanapati and since MahaGanapti has an elephant head, the Parvati tanaya-Ganesha also should have an elephant head which is the reason that the human head has to go due to some divine leela(play). I cant remember where I read this. Probably in the Kanchi mutt souvenir publication titled "Shankara and Shanmata" or elsewhere.
