It is not the first time these things are happening. Saiva nAyAnmArs, had to battle Jains so much in the past. Just to quote one case, under the influence of Jains, the king put the Saint thirunAvukkarasar through different trials and in one he was placed in a burning calcium slurry -- from there the Sage sang out that even such a hardship is like being near a pond with flowers that are full of nectar and with bees humming around them, with full moon shining and a gentle cool breeze hugging the body -- as long as the heart takes refuge in the feet of Lord shiva. (mAsil vINaiyum ...) It was through such struggles of nAyAnmArs like thirunavukkarasar, thirujnAnasambhandar, the kings under the spell of Jains woke up and Tamil Nadu became a fertile ground for vedic religion. Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati SwamigaL reigned through the peak of anti-hindu, anti-brahmanical, and anti-vedic movement of Tamil Nadu. None could come near him, accuse of him of anything. And under his reign, mAtha and its noble activities grew from strength to strength. We should ask and understand why and how that was possible. I think therein lies the key. I can only think of Sri Valluvar's maxim under the section sannyAsa (thuRavu) the verse "yAthanin yAthanin nIngiyAn nOthal athanin athanin ilan" -- From what all a renunciant stays away from; from that all he shall not be troubled by (a crude translation - this verse also has a hidden humour that the two lips will not touch while saying this verse -- that is they stay away from each other).
