Following is an extract from, http://ccbs.ntu.edu.tw/FULLTEXT/JR-ENG/bag.htm Kambuja is modern Cambodia(Thailand's neighbor). Also please see: http://manollasa.blogspot.com/2005/02/tumburu-manifestation-of- rudra.html -------------- The four faces of Tumburu--I have already tried to establish that the four Tantrik texts sirascheda, vinasikha, sammohana and nayottara mentioned in the inscription of Sdok Kak Thom were authentic Saivasastras being studied in India in the 7th and 8th centuries A.D. if not earlier. These texts constituted the "vaktracatuskam"(1) of the god ---------------------- 1. We have now a definite text before us which supports the. identification of Tumburu with Siva. In the Yogavasisttha-Ramayana (Nirvana-prakarana, I. xviii 23-26), compiled before the 9th century A.D., we find the following verses: ity astaisvarya-yuktas ta mataro raudra-cesthitah/ kadacinmilita vyomni sarvah kenapi hetuna// utsavam paramam cakruh paramarthaprakasakam/ vamasrotogata etas Tumburum Rudram asritah// pujayitva jagatpujyau devau Tumburu-Bhairavau/ vicitrarthah kathas cakrur-madira-madatositah// These things are spoken of the eight matrkas who were one day out for amusement. They are here characterised as the followers of the left current (vamasrotogata) and related to Rudra who is Tumburu i.e. the Tumburu aspect of Rudra (Tumburum Rudram). The eight-matrkas are here made to worship the two gods Tumburu and Bhairava. This passage clearly mentions Tumburu as an aspect of Rudra. It should also be noted that Siva is often referred to in the inscrip- p. 104 Tumburu and were introduced in Kambuja for establishing the mystic rites known as devaraja (siddhih........ devarajabhikhya). Tumburu evidently had some sort of connection with the Devaraja cult. Devaraja was a phallic representation (lingaraja) of Siva--and we have already seen that Tumburu was an emanation of Siva himself. -------- Rgds
Guest guest
Thanks a ton, tht really helped. I saw a movie yesterday in E TV, ie., Narada muni and Tumburu muni have an argument, the argument is for getting the Kanaka Veena of Devi. They both argue and state themselves to be great in music, and Hanuman is called upon to judge the same. But i remember my granny telling that Narada muni and Tumburu muni go proud and state they are better veena players and have a competition, Where Hanuman is the judge and he asked them both to play the veena after the frets were removed, which the fail and Hanuman himself plays the veena which is now called the Gotu Vadyam and the raga he played as Hanuma Todi. Please let me know if i am correct. Regards, Aparajit. [Namaste, That is very interesting. However, I think the Tumburu mentioned in the links is different(someone can correct me here) from the Tumburu muni. The Tumburu mentioned below is a form of Shiva. - Satish] , "Satish" <satisharigela> wrote: > > , "aparajit_bala" <aparajit_bala> > wrote: > > > Can you give me more info on tumburu? like i have heard the name > of > > the God but do not know anything about him, if any info in > available > > on the web please direct me or please tell me about him. > > Following is an extract from, > http://ccbs.ntu.edu.tw/FULLTEXT/JR-ENG/bag.htm > Kambuja is modern Cambodia(Thailand's neighbor). > Also please see: > http://manollasa.blogspot.com/2005/02/tumburu-manifestation-of- > rudra.html
