Namasthe.

To day is a very auspicious day for every Sanathana Dharmi as it is “ Maha

Shivarathry “. In the last mail we saw the DYNAMIC aspect of Divine Mom as

Bhuvaneshwari and on this very Holy day , I am thinking Her on the STATIC aspect

of Her as Lord Shiva. The Shiva and Shakthi are but the two sides of the Same

Coin.

When we think of Shiva what could readily come to one’s mind other than Sri

RUDRAM. It is called “ Rudropanishad “ because it provides the means for gaining

the eligibility for the knowledge, unfolded in Upanishad. The rudram contains

the different names of the Lord through which we can perceive him, not only as

an altar of prayer, but also the one who is not separate from the devotee – thus

it reveals the truth of Jiva – the individual and the world – Cosmos and Eshwara

the only One which Exists, like the Clay which exits as pot, cup, soccer,

spoons, Vase etc not separate from clay. The Maha Vakyas to quote say “ Sarvam

Khalvidam Brahma “ – ALL THAT IS HERE IS BRAHMAN Pl note this ALL it is the One

in different names and forms.

Rudra is sure to liquefy and evaporate the sorrow of samasara and all the bad

Karmic effects that one unfolds in this life.

Sri Rudra consists of 11 Anuvakas or sections and is part of Krishna Yajur Veda.

Every hymn is in different meter with a seer, rishi and devatha .

In the first section or anuvaka the parayer to Ambaa Om as Lord Shiva is asking

him to be Kind and Giving.

>From the second to nineth anuvaka the lord is meditated and saluted as Sarvatma,

all forms constituting the world – He is sarveshwara all forms and pluralities

which exists and the cause of sustaining everything. In the first nine anuvakas

the word Namaha occurs 300 times and so popularly known as namakam.

The tenth anuvaka consists again as prayer to the Lord and the eleventh the Lord

is prayed to in the form of many devathas sustaining different spheres of

experience.

Anuvaka 8 is very important since it contains the Maha Mantra “ NAMAH SHIVAYA “

of Ambaaji as Shiva.

Brief meaning of Anuvaka 8

Salutation ( S ) to the one seated with Uma, to lord Rurda, S to the rising

sun,to the sun that obtains a little later, S to the one who gives happiness, to

the one who is lord of all beings, S to the one who excels in glory, to the one

who is cause of fear. S to the one who protects from the front, to the one who

protects from far away, S to the one who is the destroyer of Samsara totally, S

to the one who is in the form of green leaves, S to the one who gives happiness

here, happiness hereafter, and the very source of happiness or the Bliss. S to

the one who gives freedom, SALUTATION TO LORD SHIVA, S to the one who obtains in

a sacred place, to the one who obtains on the banks of the river, on the other

side of the river, to this side of the river, to the one who helps all to cross

the sins, to the one who helps to cross the sin of ignorance, S to the one who

obtains in rebirth, to the one who obtains in Jivas, S to the one who obtains in

tender grass, in foam, in sand and flow of

river.

The Bhasyas or commentaries to the apparent meanings posted above , of this

anuvaka has to be studied carefully to fully understand what is said.
