Guest guest
SrimAtre namaH Every name of ambA is sweet and valuable. But if for some reason, you are asked to choose only one name from the lalitA sahasranAma, what will be your choice? and why? (If you are unable to choose, please ignore this message). Thank you. Guest guest
One of my favorite names in the recent years (due to indoctrination in a different direction from my husband) is: mR^iga-nAbhi-visheShakA To appreciate this name one must just look at the sky on a nice clear night from a mountain top or a open field. One sees the constellations of the zodiac stretching across the sky in the form of a great band. mR^iga-nAbhi: nave (rim of wheel) of the animals (the zodiac: the Greek word means the same thing). visheShaka: marked or decorated. So this gives the real feel of the cosmic totality of the goddess tripurA, the prakR^iti, whose coronet is the celestial band of the zodiac. Guest guest
Namaste Ravishankar-ji > Your explanation was fascinating. But the texts I have do not list > this as a name by itself. But it is part of the name > mukha-chandra-kaLaN^kAbha-mR^iganAbhi-viSeShakA The explanation I was given at home was that: mukha-chandra- kaLaN^kAbha= to the spot on the moon face (that is the tilaka) and the mR^iganAbhi-viSeShakA= the coronet that is the zodiacal band. > mR^iganAbhi is taken to mean musk (based on deer's navel). Common sanskrit lexicons indeed tend to list mR^iganAbhi as musk and it is synonymous with the more common term in sanskrit kastUri- tilaka. But the mR^iganAbhi as the zodiac is encountered in Jyotisha literature. Both the tilaka and the coronet pertain to the forehead and are valid. From the grammatical viewpoint since there is only one feminine ending in the 1/2 shloka i.e. viSeShakA, I admit that your statement that the whole 1/2 shloka is one name, is more appropriate. Thanks for raising the matter, RR

But if for some reason, you > are asked to choose only one name from the lalitA sahasranAma, what > will be your choice? and why? shivA, shivapriya, shivaGYAna pradAyini shivA: shaM is said to mean shAshavat sukhaM or shAshvata Ananda i.e eternal bliss. va is said to represent amr^itatva i.e immortality. shiva is one who is of the form of eternal bliss/perpetual happiness and immortality. So is shivA. These are the essence of LS. Above is according to the shiva purANa. Likewise is understood shivapriyA. shivaGYAna among other things can also mean the pa~ncAkShari mahA mantra. Since devI can lead one to moxa, and pa~ncAkShari can goad one towards moxa too, the name seems appropriate for devI. shivaGYAna pradAyini However the speciality of LS is the name *lalitAmbika* as that does not appear very frequently in other sahasranAma-s. In another way, that name can be considered the very essence.
