Guest guest
many pranams to all i like "srI mAtrE namahA" in LS, we are having 5 words to denote the maa direcly as maa. srI mAtA, mAtA, ambA, ambikA, jananI - 1. it starts with makaara (m) which denotes the jIva akshara in pranava. 2. to give us all the fruits (phala0 of the lowkeeka and aatmeeka, it starts with srI 3. it starts with amma's name as amma (mother) since that is the first bond between us and HER. to explain this in detail, abiraami bhattar in his second verse itself notes that she is our help, worshipful lordess and our mother (please note that he is not mentioning HER as mere mother - he is telling HER as his own mother who gave birth to him in all respects. for us to understand abiraami bhattar says that she is our help (my rude translation to the tamil word "tuNai" - but it gives more meaning than this - please forgive me for my this shortcoming) since we understand from the benefits we get from somebody. then he cautions us that "do not think HER as a mere help, she is the worshipful lordess (dheivAm) (in tamil dheivam not only means the Goddess but also other meanings like one who is light, one who is superior, one who is a devatA etc). then he consoles us that my mother is more than a mere help and goddess. she is my own mother. in abirAmi andhathi also, bhattar ! calls mother as mother within 20 verses in 6 places direcly. most of these are same. 4. In abirAmi andAti, the order is reverse. but in LS, the order of namAs are straight. first and foremost she is my own mother, then she is the lordess (emperess), then she is the one who can bestow you all the helps or anything you want 5. also if we read tiruppugazh, saint arunagirinaadhar praises my mother as mother in several places with lots of meanings in each. several namaas of LS can be found clearly in tiruppugazh. since yestereday was our ugaadi festival and the start of vasantha navaratri, i thought that i can share my humble opinion with you all from the new year onwards. kindly forgiv e me for my mistakes and correct me also. the shortcomings are due to my ignorance only. again sorry for my inability to convey this still in clearer words since the nAmA is more than the above. with many pranams to all of you since you have kindled my thoughts about my ma. vaidyanathan wrote: SrimAtre namaH Every name of ambA is sweet and valuable. Guest guest
My choice will be the 712th name, "I" ( phonetically ee). This has a synonymous name kAmakalArUpA. In the Tamil translation I have, commentary on "I" runs to 6 pages. It is just amazing to read it. When I find time, I will translate this entire piece. The other name that I remember/use always is ambA. But I agree with other members, it is indeed dificult to choose. I like Sri Ganapathy's example, "which eye will one choose from the two eyes". Just as each eye adds its input and makes it a stereoscopic vision. Each name provides an insight into HER and together they reveal the multi-dimensional aspect of ambA. I liked every response posted by our members. I hope more will come forward. Ravi tAM padminIM IM sharaNamahaM prapadye
Guest guest
Come to think of it. While everyone of us likes to contemplate and meditate on a particular attribute of Ambal which appeals to us from within myriad attributes and namams, doesn't the very first namam of LS "Shi Mata" symbolise the essence of all the namams in the Stotram? SHE is the Divine Mother who brings us forth in to this world; to whom we relate to all through our life right from our birth till we breathe our last; the very first word all of us learn to utter; the ONE who teaches us what is good for us and what is not; the ONE who guides us and stands by us through all ups and downs; the ONE who loves us, cares for us and blesses us always even if we are not at our best with her; the ONE who grants what ever we ask for and even if she does delay somethimes and denies, it is always due to some good reason and towards our good. The ONE who is not egoistic or vengeful and tries to instill good values in us. If we were to analyse every namam in LS, it would ultimately lead back to the very first namam, which is a personification of all the attributes of Ambal. All these attributes whether beauty, power, valour, great deeds, knowledge, love and compassion, auspiciousness - you name it - everyone of these qualities is what we find in a Mother and that is what SHE symbolises. Guest guest
Namasthe. A very good reasoning but it falls short to qualify as the first Best choice if one accepts the following argument. Even when we are born, while as an infant we are able to identify only the Physical Mom immediately and it is only through her we know our father and the world. This identification process of Physical mother is programmed in nature but for it it would be impossible for us to identify even our own Mom. When identification of Physical Mom is so complicated, beyond our means, imagine how diificult it is for us to Recognize the Supreme as " Sri Matha ji " the Universal Mom. We are all born spiritually blind and it is the Guru who gives us the required light to our spiritual eyes. This light solely gives the ability to reconize Her as Sri Matha. even if we fail in this birth to recognize her as Supreme Mother in spite of guru's grace, we have nothying to lose, as we would take the next birth as a Book Mark and the spiritual evolution continues. Therefore dont you think that the Namavaly " Guru Murthy " -- 603 should be the Best one and no doubt the second place should go for Sri Matha. In the Sri Vidya Sadhana the equation goes as " Guru = Manthra = Devatha=Sri Chakram should not be considered different from self " Comments on this mail are Welcome. regards ganapathy Vani Sriram <vani_sriram wrote: Come to think of it. Guest guest
Dear Vani ji Thanks for creating a space to share my thoughts on this. I think love and sentiments comes into play when we say physical Mother should be the first Guru. We should go beyond this ,to understand who is a guru and to know this our sole guidance should be Shastras only. While Mother, father and guru should be respected with equal divinity ,the plane of father is lesser than that of Mother and the dimension of mother is lesser than that of a Guru. With Mathru Bhakthi one gets the prosperity and peace of Eha Loka ( present world ), with pithru Bhakthi one gets the Anthariksha Loka and with Acharya or Guru Bhakthi the Brahmma Loka. ( As said by Manu ) The Shastras also elevates the status of Guru by declaring that three Most important opportunities ever are -- the first to be born as a human being -- the second to have a strong desire to know the Truth -- the third to get a Maha purusha as a Guru. ( in the same order ) Refer viveka Chudamani. ( The last three paras are approximate translations from Deivathhin kural of maha swamy ) Shastras also proclaim the traits of a good Guru -- like He or She should have Shastra knowledge, should do their prescribed karmas, should be kind and calm, should not be greedy and should have a strong desire to uplift his sishya and should have the ability to clear the doubts of his sishya apart from other traits which is not detailed here. For a Sishya, it may be difficult to get a good Guru with all these lakshanas in kali yuga. So it is better to overlook some of the weaknesses if a guru has and focus on his progress by absorbing all the strengths of his guru. For these reasons all our Masters like Shankara, Purandara dasha, and even Paramahamsa while respecting their own physical Mother sought the help of a spiritual guru and did not take their Mother as a guru. nevertheless, our Sanatana dharma elevates the status of physical Mother to such an extent that it is obligatory for even a Sanyasin to do Namaskarams to mother , while this is optional for Father. Regards ganapathy Vani Sriram <vani_sriram wrote: Dear Mama, SHE is indeed 'Guru Murthy'. Isn't Mother the first Guru for any child? Guest guest
Om Sri Ganeshaya Namaha The name 'balipriyA' fills me with peace. Dear Devotees, As many of you have felt, it is not possible to choose one name of HER over another. But while reciting the LS, some of HER names give a pulse to my mind. One of them is .. " OM dhyAna dhyAtru dhyeya rUpAyai namaH " The meditation, the meditator and that meditated upon are all Devi herself. SHE is all. She shows HER presence ....in meditation, ...in the meditator and ...in the energy used to meditate upon. SHE is everything. With such an awareness, the devotee is released from the bondage to good and evil actions. He will understand that the actions done by him are actually performed by Devi herself. Hence there will be no attachment to these actions. Thus ...this knowledge will free the devotee from binding himself to this world. This is my understanding of this namavali. Pardon me if I am wrong and pl correct my mistakes.
