Multiple Gods - Why need to invoke them ?

Pranams.

Hindus have a large number of gods and goddesses and is said to be 330 millions.

The act of worshipping so many gods at the same time is no problem for hindus,

since We beleive that all forms are manifestations of the ONE GOD -- Brahman.

Each aspect of the Brahman like the Vayu - air, Varuna - water, Agni - fire,

Indra - God of heaven, Yama etc could be perceived in the mental plane --

separately through specific Mantras and when that particular mantra when

chanted, produces the limited result. ( Example When rain is needed -- the

Varuna Japam )

Since no human description can ever do justice to Ambaa's magnitude or Her

power, I guess so many mantras exist ( result oriented mantras and not imaginary

sounds ) as the number of Gods exists and that is the reason or need to invoke

the God for a particular purpose, which is just a negligible power of Her

infinite power.

Rig veda says God or truth is one and wise men describe it in different ways.

While the Upanishads have maintained the existence of One God -- Brahman , the

only reference of multiple Gods in the upanishads comes in Brihadaranyaka

Upanishad during the conversation between Sage Yagnavalkya and a devotee named

Vidagdha Sakalya.

How many Gods are there, YAGNAVALKYA ?

The Sage says three thousand three hundred six and this question is repeated six

times adding only ' BUT'.

Reply comes each time as thirty six, six, three, two, one and half, and finally

ONE.

This conversation makes us conclude that even though there are many gods, in

reality there is only ONE and he appears in thousands of different forms to

devotees according to the way or the need -- we perceive Her through a specific

mantra (discovered from space by our maharishies ) and that particular form

appear to answer our particular need.

My question not just related to Lord MArtAnDa bhairava or

sharabhEshvara or any other god inlcuding srI mAtA, but to any god ...

Do we always NEED to INVOKE the gods in order to get protected by them?
