Dictionary meaning of avyAja and the meaning implied in Sri

bhAskararAya's bhAShya does not take avyAja as "without reason" or

without basis.

vyAja means deceit, fraud, deception, and so on.

avyAja is the absence of deceit. In other words there is no pretence.

bhAskararAya states that "avyAjA anaupadhiki yA karuNa saiva mUrtiH

svarUpam yasyAH". upadhi also means fraud, act of putting on etc. My

tamil book also translates this in the sense as "absence deceit"

(tamil, "sUdhu illAtha"), not showing partiality (pakSha pAdam

illAtha), etc. This is not same as "without reason". Without reason

could be a derived understanding of this term.

To give an example, if a mother has two sons, and one of them does all

the work and other just sits in front of her keeps praising her

(without doing his duty). A human mother might favor the second over

the first. As human nature is not always just and fair. But on the

other hand a just and fair mother will not be swayed by superficial

behaviour and show partiality based on that. Nor will she pretend to

be compassionate and hate internally.

So it is with divine mother, she will not show partiality or deceit in

Her mercy. It is available to all, but limited only on the basis of

our capacity to receive. She is indeed a ocean of the nectar called

karuNa (karuNAmR^ita sAgara - triSati). If you go to a ocean with a

small spoon, you can get only that much out of it. Worse still, if go

to that ocean with a vessel already full with bad tendencies and you

are not willing to throw that away to get the nectar from there, you

will get nothing. Hence, the karuNa we are able to receive is limited

by our innate tendencies and our capacity receive. And on Her side of

the equation, there is no partiality or deceit.

Thanks.

Ravi
