Last of the three-part (first of flowers and second of leaves used

for worship). Suggestions/corrections/additions welcome from posters.

 

Name of naivEdyams (food for the worship of god)

 

1. annam - refers in gen. to cooked rice/ghee

Varieties:

a. SharkarAnnam - rice mixed with sugar (sometimes also refers to

cakrapongal made w/ mundiri paruppu & brown rice - a favorite food

enjoyed by dEvi)

b. kuDAnnam - ven pongal

c. haridrAnnam - rice mixed with lemon juice (elumicchaipazha ShAdam)

d. tintiriNi annam - puLiyodarai/puLiyOgarai

d. nALikErAnnam - rice mixed w/ coconut (tEngAy ShAdam)

e. tilAnnam - eL ShAdam (often offered to dEvI)

f. ShakAnnam - kadambam (rice w/ mixture)

g. dadhiyannam - tayirShAdam

h. ShAlyAnnam - ???

 

2. pAyasa - in gen. kheer made with milk sometimes

kshIrapAyasam/kshIrAnnam

ghRtagulapAyasam - kheer made with ghee & molasses(???)

nArikElakshIra pAyasa - kheer made w/ coconut milk (I think this

is done in kERaLa)

 

 

3. mOdaka - sweetened rice balls; also kozhukaTTai (a sweetmeat w/

sometimes sweet filling inside called 'pUraNam' with the outside

cover made of riceflour dough and made into a shape of bells)

 

pinDe - lump of rice/flourball usu. given during Ahuti(hOma) and

pitR^i (obsequies)

 

4. Others

These were mentioned in the pUjA vidhAnam published by Ramakrishna

Math, Chennai. I wasn't able to find corresponding English names for

all of them.

 

Shashkuli - muRukku also dried rice-cake

apUpaM - appam

mAshApUpaM/vaDai - vaDai (ring cake)

tANDula cakram - most prob. refers to arisimAvu dosai(made w/ rice-

flour)

pratukE/gulOpEtam - jaggery(refined brown sugar)

sattkuni - appam

laajaM - wheat flakes (poRiyal)

tarpaNam - avil

ladduka - laddU sweet-ball made with bUndi

guLApUpam - atirasam

dadhikUrcaM - tayirkkaTTi

vaTapakram - ilaivaDakam

madhucUraNam - tEnkUTTu

madirA - pazharasam

dadhirasam - tayirEDu

navanItam - butter ball (veNNey)

kilADam - pAsanti

kshIralaDDukam - teraTTipAl

marIci apUpam - miLagu vaDai

balikrambam - idli

ShAkhApUrNam - aviyal

plaintain

- rambhaaphala - refers to varieties of plaintain

2. jambU phala(nAgappazham) - rose-apple

3. jambIra phala(elumiccai) - lemon

4. nAraMga/nAranga/-gakam - orange

5. nAlikEra - cocoa-nut

6. madhu phala - a variety of coconut

7. mAtula - Dhattura???

8. mAtulinga/madhubIja - citron

9. Amra - mango (also known as phalarAja - 'king of fruit')

10. panasa(cakkai) - jackfruit

11. anaanasaphala - pineapple

12. bR^ituka/bhR^ituka/sEvama - apple

bRhatpATali/kalabhavaphala/cidraphala - thorn-apple

kapittha -wood-apple

13. mRdvIka/drAkshA/pRthumRdvIka/dvIpasambhava(drATcai) -

raisins/grapes

14. badarI/badarikaa(ilandaippazham) - jujupe fruit

15. daaDimaphala/b(/p)IjApu(/U)ra(mAtulam) - pomegranate

16. amRtAhva/amRtaphala - pear

17. kharjUra - date

18. amlanimbUka - lime

19. vRttErvAru/vRttakarkaTI/gODimba - watermelon

20. bahubiijaphalam.h (koyyApazham)- guava

21. chirbita - the papaya fruit (caricus papaya)
