LS - 556 - kAtyAyanI

Translation of bhAskara rAya's commentary by R. A Sastry.

The daughter of a rishi named kata. This is the name

of the deity in the collective form of the brightness (Tejas)

of all the devas. The vAmana purANa says, "That brightness which is

the best, and the greatest, is known in the world by the name of

kAtyAyanI. Under that name She shines and is celebrated in the world."

According to kAlikA purANa, this is the deity at oDhyANa. The devI

purANa says "ka means brahmA, head and the philosopher's stone; as She

supports or rests upon them, She is called kAtyAyanI."

The pradIpa, a commentary on saptashatI has this to say:

"deva kAryArthaM kAtyAyanAshrame AvirbhUtA tena kanyAtvena...etc"

For a divine purpose, She took birth in the Ashrama of kAtyAyana. She

did not marry and forever remained a kumArI i.e a kanya.

Hence She is known as kAtyAyanI. Since She has been a kumArI forever

She is ever independent as She is not subject to any authority.

I confess that I did not understand the sanskrit commentary

completely here. Feel free to correct. Hopefully my understanding isnt

a complete blunder.

By the way, is anybody aware of any publication of the work by name

kAtyAtyanI tantra?

Regards

sa.
