Guest guest
Origin of vaTuka nAtha. Since the likes of vetAla-s etc have been depriving the upAsaka-s of their merit of their upAsana/tapas, kalI and tArA meditated on the form of vaTuka. Then vaTuka is said to have been formed of the tejas of all the deva-s. Then tArA gave him an upavIta(the sacred thread - yaGYopavIta). chinnA (chinna masta) gave him a kapAla and kAlI gave him a trishUla. The three prongs of this trishUla are known to be kAlI, tArA and chinnamasta. Other devata-s, yakSha-s gandharva-s etc are known to have taken the shape of dogs to serve vaTuka bhairava. After shiva took this form of vaTuka bhairava, then all beings were assured protection from the vetAla-s. vaTuka is said to be like a son to devI and hence kAlI, tArA and others are said to be easily pleased when vaTuka nAtha is pleased. Coming back to the trishUla of vaTuka shiva, it is known to be the collective form of kAlI, tArA and chinnamasta. It is also said in the same chapter that kAlI, tArA and chinnamasta collectively are known as "mahA krodha" - the great anger. Focusing on the word krodha which literally mean anger, we may refer to the note about this word(krodha) as given in the krodha bhairava sUtra or the krodha tantra(which is said to be closely related to works like bindu vijaya tantra and krodha mAlinI saMhita) "Anger is said to be that by virtue of which one becomes genuinely one pointedly intent on removing whatever obstacle there may be to liberation." One may relate the imagery of vaTuka shiva wielding the trishUla which is mahAkrodha on those lines. sa.
