maitrI- Adi - vAsanA - labhyA

By the term " Adi", along with maitrI, karuNa (compassion), muditA

(joy) and upexA (indifference) is also included. By developing these

latent tendencies SHE can be obtained.

bhAskararAya quotes three different sources to explain it. They are

viShNu bhAghavata, yoga Sutra and the third one he does not name it

(but simply notes is wise one say). That is also very much in line

with yoga.

This particular topic is taken up in detail in yoga sUtra I-33 and

following comments are based on this, especially the vyAsa bhAShya

translation by Hariharananda Aranya and the vivaraNa translation by

Prof. Rukimini. I request the readers to refer to Vyasa bhAShya,

especially the translation and additional notes by Swami Hariharananda

Aranya for a clear exposition of terms like vAsana, samAdhi, etc.

The attitude called maitrI or friendliness should be cultivated

towards those who are happy and who enjoy the bhoga-s. Envy should not

take its place.

Similarly attritude of karuNa or compassion is taken towards those who

suffer. This should take place of mocking or feelings such as "thank

god I am not suffering like that", or "he must have sinned badly to

suffer like this". Instead the natural response should be compassion.

And towards those who observe dharma it should be joy/happiness. It

should not be guilt thinking "I am not doing him" or aversion that I

not worthy of these people.

Towards those who sin it should be indifference. According to

vivaraNakAra if indifference is not cultivated towards sin/sinners,

mind might get engaged in this dirt. That is one of the reasons one

should not explain his sins and confess about with great details.

Because, it could destroy the listener by creating bad tendencies in

his/her mind.

Through the cultivation of these good vAsana-s, mind will become pure

and clear. This step will fall under chitta suddhi. Eventually, it

will be lead success in yoga and help one to finally unite with HER.

More thoughts on the same line,

(a)

She is attainable by those who posses friendliness, love, devotion

towards great devotees.

(b)

She is attainable through maitryI, prema and other bhakti bhava

towards her. She being the only eternal friend (dvAsuparNA

….sakAyau) as she alone resides with this jIvA as the inner

consciousness. She is attained through assimilating this

relationship.

Life after life may I serve Her with love and friendship, and may I

cultivate such firm attachment for Her by the precious association

of Her devotees with supreme qualities.

I went back and read most of the posts related to LS and really

enjoyed it.

One observation (I might be wrong), in most cases I think the

commentator's explanation is complete. It is very hard to add more

from a 'padArtha' word analysis aspect, unless you are a vyAkaraNa

expert. On the other side there is infinite scope for bhAvArtha, we

can quote from various sources and increase our bhakti through

rAsikhyam and bhAvam.

Raviji, these words of yours ( from Patanjali's yoga sutra verse 33)

remind me of verse 16 from Ai shankaracharya's Prashnottara Ratna

mallika :

The question is

KA preyasi vidheya

What should be one's favorite duty in life ?

The answer is

*Karuna* Dineshu sajjano *Maitri*

Being kind to all the suffering living beings and making friendship

with the honest and holy men. (karuna - diineshu, saj-jana maitri )

[karuna-kindness; diina - suffering ones; maitri-friendhip]

(this was posted in my group by a member - I don't know the source -

this may be AvAILABLE on KANCHKAMKOTI WEB SITE )

It is only through 'sharanagati' at Devi's lotus feet one can

cultivate 'sattvic qualities like Compassion, kindness ,

forgiveness , mercy etc and in the company of holy men/women (

satsangha) such qualities increse manifold .

Sri Aravind's explanation of this nama is equally fascinating. May we

request him to share his knowledge, wisdom, rasikyam and bhavam with

us as often as possible.

OM SHRI MATRE NAMAH

SHRI GURUBHYO NAMAH
