Guest guest
All, I am planning to learn Sri Rudram Namakam Chamakam on my own (using Books & CDs) and recite regularly. I do not know sanskrit (except reading up the word by word translations of some works not much understanding of Sanskrit). My questions to you all are 1. Can Sri Rudram be recited without su-swara? If so what could be the reason? 2. Can it be recited while travelling / walking / in office (not aloud but can i play it in my mind / in iPod?) 3. What precautions should I take while learning / reciting? 4. What references(books / websites/ CDs) would you all suggest? Thanks in advance. rgds, Mahesh. PS: I am based in Hyderabad. Guest guest
Om Shri MahaGanapathaye Namah. Shri Vimarshaanandanaatham, Sathyaamba sahitam Gurum. Hridpadmakarnika Madhye Bhaavayeth Sarva Siddhaye. Dear Shri Mahesh. I have some personal opinions in this regard. ** Please understand that these are my opinions. Also, they are tried and tested traditions over thousands of years. The Rudra Prashnah and the Chamaka Prashnah are texts that are charged with divine power. Part of the power in this text, as recited in Southern India, is the incantation method, with accurate placement of the swaras. So, my personal opinions are: 1. Repeat it with swaras ( since you are from Hyderabad ). 2. Learn from a learned person. Develop the correct swara habits early. If you do not inculcate it now, then you will have to put in double the effort later. 3. I am sure there are many priests in Hyderabad who would be willing to come to your house to teach you these sacred texts. They will be thankful for your efforts at learning and you can provide some much needed support to some priest who does so much for the community, but gets so little in return (materially). I am sure they have houses to buy and daughters to marry also. 4. Repeat it daily at the same time of day. Preferably early morning, after your bath, and after applying vibhuti to your forehead, arms and chest in three horizontal stripes. Repeating at the office / ipod etc., will not help you to learn it correctly and accurately, and you may end up repeating it incorrectly. (In one example, I actually saw a version of Shiva Ashtothara Shatha nama with the name "Ajnaaya" namah. This should be "Ajaaya" Namah. The first word means Ignorant, and the second word means Undefeated). This is why a learned person is required - at least initially. 5. Please inquire around and choose a good, standard source of text for your reading. You can look at Shri Ramakrishna Math at various locations throughout India (primarily Mumbai and Chennai). 6. Once you have mastered it, you can repeat it daily during and/or immediately after your morning bath, but I still would encourage you to progress on to daily pujas. God only knows the reasons why you are being pushed to learn these texts. It is a God given opportunity. Do not let this desire go waste. I had a similar opportunity, and put in the effort every morning at 5:30 AM every day. A priest used to come to our house every morning. It was DIFFICULT, but well worth it. (I was working until 2:30 AM most days during that time period). Many years later I came to America and met another gentleman with the same interests. Even though we had learnt it from different people, we were able to repeat it FIRST TIME, with exact same incantation. That was a divine experience for all. That developed into a weekly Puja at our residences, people started visiting our houses, and finally a temple has come up here in USA, because of that effort. You cannot believe how thankful I am for all the hard work put in during those early years of my spiritual life. Shri Shivaayai Namah. Shri Shiva Shakthyai Namah. Good Luck! Love and Regards. mrssrinivas
Rudra Namakam and Chamakam should be recited only with Swaram. Books are available in Net with Swaram. However, if you want to practice with the help of Audio, it shall be OK. In the last you shall follow the following mantra which neutralizes the bad affects of "apaswaram". Yadakshara Padabrashtam matrahenam tu yadbhavet, tatsarvam kshamyatam deva narayana namo stute visarga bindu matrani pada paadaaksharani cha nunaatiriktam yatkinchidabhihi girbhirudeerayet abhirgirbhiryadato na oona mapyaya harivo vardhamanaha yada stotrabhyo mahi gotra rujasi bhuistabhajo adha te syama brahma pravadishma tanno ma haaseet Om Shantih Shantih Shantihi All, I am planning to learn Sri Rudram Namakam Chamakam on my own (using Books & CDs) and recite regularly.
