That is neat and should take care of Shiva or Vishnu.

a better known version is probably Bhasa's ( Harsha's time 8-9 th centurry ?)

runs

Puspeshu Jaathi ( Jaathi among flowers )

Nagareshu Kanchi ( kanchi among cities )

Streeshu Rambha ( Angel Rambha among damsels )

Purusheshu VISHNU ( Lord Vishnu among men )

I think it may be a South Indian in Pallava's court. Kanchi was

the Capital for the Pallavas. But they precede Ramanuja and Saivism

was dominant. Mahendra varman had accepted Sanskrit as a State

Language then ( in TamilNadu! )

It is interesting that Vishnu is the best of men , Adwaitha philosphy ?)

Sankara might have been a contemporary? My knowledge may be from

historic fictional episodes.

Nagareshu Kanchi (Kanchi among cities) was quoted by the great poet

Kalidasa and not by Bhasa

I think this is from KaaLidaasa. I have seen a reference to it in Kalki's

Sivakaamiyin Sabadam.

On a different note, since there are many Sanskrit quotations we come across on

this mailing list, folks may want to try the Sanskrit mailing list. It is

more populous than this list, and has been chaotic for the 3 days that I have

been on it, but hopefully it will settle down and I can pick up some stuff from

it. Please note that it doesn't provide primers or learning exercises of any

kind; you get a lot of Sanskrit with translations. With some active work, you

can benefit. You can send mail to vmurthy with the subject

line as " sanskrit".

Thanks. But the verse is 4 lines. I think it is Bojha's time.

He had the great men of letters then

here are some better ones

Bukkunda was sentenced to death by the king. He gets pardon reciting

Bhattir Nashtaha, Bharvih-so-pi Nashtaha

Bhikkur Nashtaha, Bheemaseno-pi Nashtaha

Bhukkundo-ham, Bhupathis-tvam cha rajan

Bha-bha-vallyam antakah sampravehitah

Another a real kicker ( vulgar or wise ? )

Dhurram Bhuurram Bhayam Naastih

Koyyam Piyyam cha Madyamam

Thiss-a-goram Maha-goram

Niss-cahbdam Prana-sankatam

The translation runs

Durr Burr fear-not Koi piyyh can be withstood

Thiss piss is dangerous, but silent ones are the deadly!
