Guest guest
Hello everyone, My name is Ramesh. I am 25 years old and am doing my final year in chemical engineering at the National University of Singapore. I am Iyengar and belong to Uruppatur Nallan Chakravarty gothram. Many a times I wanted to know about the significance of gothram in our Iyengar tradition. I have this question: Has gothram anything to do with ancestry? Unfortunately, our ancestors didn't keep either diaries or family trees which can help trace family lines. I happen to know that the great man Rajagopalachari or known to everyone as Rajaji belong t o the same gothram as me! Does anybody know more about the gothram? Maany thanks! raghavan56
Dear Sri Ramesh, I happen to go through your thread, my maternal grand father is Urupattur Nallan Chakravarthy Narasimhachary who hailed from a village near Kanchipuram called Tahndalam. Only this much I know, they belong to Srivatsa gothram, I belong to Kausika Gothram. Could you throw more light on Urupattur Nallan families? Please email if possible. Ravindran Kesavan
There are two systems of Gothra: One, the family tree - which traces the biological lineage. Two, the spiritual initiation lineage- which traces the unbroken guru disciple lineage of a spiritual tradition. Whichever the first guru's name who started the spiritual tradition become the gothra name for all the followers of that tradition in this system.
