Srinivasan's recent nice posting enumerating "a thousand reasons for being a vegetarian", may i please note a sloka from Srimad Bhagavad Geeta, wherein Sri Krishna Paramatma says:- "Bhoktaram yajna tapasAm, Sarva lOka Maheshvaram, **Suhrdam sarva bhootAnAm** jnatva mAm Santim rchhati" (hope the words are OK). The implication is that ALL CREATURES, not just human beings, are the objects of His Friendship.
