Thirumalishai Alvar & a Shatamarshiniya

At one time, I had promised that I will summarize

Shatamarshana lineage of mufamily tree, as researched and published few years

ago by my father (K.S. Krishnatatachar) in the Kannada language.

This book is entitled;

"Shatamarshanara Aajana Siddha Mahime"

Pub. Brahmatantra Parakal Mutt (May 1976).

I found that one of my ancestors, side by side with Thirumalishai alwar, did

kainkaryam for Aravamudhan in Kumbhakonam. I thought it is appropriate to

post this in connection with the Thirunakshatram of Thirumalishai alwar.

For whatever it is worth, the geneology posted here throws some historical

perspective to the saga of Srivaishavism.

I must also say that my father belonged to the same category of vydhikas who

stopped reciting Vedas at the site of Thirumalihai alwar (perhaps as they did

not have molten lead handy!- just kidding. Bhagavathas, please don't refute

this).

Nevertheless, what is interesting is that my father had no problem writing

in his book that our ancestors freely mingled with Thirumalishai and other

such bhakthas.

Abhivadaye! Angirasa, Paurakutsa, Trasadasya,

thraya Rishayah pravaranvita, Shatamarshana gotrah,

Apastambha sutrah, Yajushhakadhyayi, Sri Krishna Tatacharya sharma nama aham

asmi bhOh.

On a lighter note:

Father of Trasdasyu was Purakutsu, mother was Purukutsani (sounds like a

Sindhi name ?). She had problem conceiving a child. After a great penance,

Trasadas was born. When, Trasadas came to know this, he performed a special

Yaga, so that nobody else in their lineage down the road should have any

problem in having a child. reference for the Trasadas Yaga is seen in

Taittiriya Samhita (5-6-5) as follows:

Etham Vaipara AatNaarah kakshivaa aushijOveetha havyashraayasah trasadasyuh

paurukutsyah praja kAmA achinvata tattauvaitE sahasram sahasran

putrAnavindanta pratHatE prajayA pashubhistHAm mAtrAmApnOte yAm tE gachhan ya

evam vidvanEta mugdim chinutE.

My father comments, "to this date, the power of Trasdas Yaga is bearing

fruit and to his knowledge, no Shatamarshiniya had to ever take any special

efforts (Naga Pratishte etc) to have a child". My father further notes " I

wish Trasadas had not done such a Yaga"(I hope, my father did not say this on

my account!). After all this Yaga has some grave consequences in a

pre-condom/pill era!
