There is a pithy saying in Tamil:

 

- Arasan Andru Kolvan Deivam Ninru Kollum

 

This means that "King will kill (or punish) immediately whereas god will

kill (or punish) after sometime. Basically, god gives us time to change

from our bad ways before punishing us.
