Guest guest
During Anadhyayanam, chanting of NAlAyira Divya Prabandam is suspended. In placeof them, only NAlAyira Thanians & Desika Prabandams are chanted at home as well as temples. I have attended Desika Prabandam chanting at home in the month of Krithigai. This is the tradition followed in most of temples in Tamil Nadu. In Sattumurai, when ThiruppAvai and ThirupallAndu cannot be chanted, "Adaikkala pathu" (Desika Prabandam) is chanted. Guest guest
In addition, in many homes, the Tamil prabandhams of Sri ManavaaLa MaamunigaL are recited during the an-adhyanana period. (Anadhyana is the time that the Alvar paasurams, save a few, are not recited as a matter of course). Prominent among these is the upadhEsa raththina maalai, which is a work in 74 verses honoring the major acharyas in MaamunigaL's line. There is also the "aarthi prabandham", where MaamunigaL fervently prays to Ramanuja to shed his blessings on him. I am not sure if aarthi prabandham is regularly recited at this time -- those in the know please correct me. Is it not true that during saaRRumuRai, thiruppaavai is generally recited (siRRam, vangam), but not thiruppallaandu? After all, the anadhyanana period includes the month of maargazhi in which the thiruppaavai plays the most prominent part. Learned members please add further to this discussion. Guest guest
During anadhyananam period, in addition to chanting desika prabandham (vadagalai) and upadesa raththinamaali, etc. (thengalai), I have known (especially in vadagalai goshti's) naalaayira thaniyan is chanted for sevakaalam and the last 2 stanzas of tiruvaimozhi and iramaanusa noothanthaathi are chanted for saathumurai). On a different note, I am this question for quite some time: Almost all aazhwaars have ignored varadaraja perumal for some reason. I can recall only boothathaazhwaar (aththiyUraan..) singing in praise of varadar. What was the reason for this? Please excuse me if this question has been already answered earlier. adiyEn, Satish satish

But you are right to notice the relative omission, compared to Srirangam and Tirupati (vengadam), and particularly compared to how much later acharyas such as Kurattalvan and Desika were enamored by this God. I can surmise a reason, based on my reading and talking to some Kanchipuram locals. It seems that at the time of the alvars, the Varadaraja PerumaaL kOvil was not nearly as grand or important as some of the other shrines. In fact, thiru vehka (yathokta kAri svAmi, sonna vaNNam seyda perumaaL) nearby in Kanchi seemed to be much more important to the first alvars (mudhal alvargaL). Maybe our own Bhashyam Nallappa, who hails from thiru vehka, can clarify this. Anyway, perhaps due to the association of great people Tirukkacci Nambi, Ramanuja, and others, more and more people became attached to Varadaraja PerumaaL, compared to other local shrines in Kanchi (there are so many temples there!), eventually leading to the situation we have today where the Varadaraja Swami shrine is simply known to Sri Vaishnavas as "perumaaL kOvil". There are also those Kanchipuram natives who lovingly and zealously believe that any mention in the Prabandham to "Lord of the Devas", (as in amarargaL adhipathi, tvm 1.1.1) refers specifically to Kanchi Varadaraja Swami (dheyvap perumaaL)! Guest guest
I would like to convey my sincere thanks to Sriman Sadagopan, Mani and Anand for enlightening me with Azhwars' sthuthi of varadaraja perumal. Thank you once again, and with warm regards, adiyEn Satish
