Guest guest
Dear Sri Vaishnavas, All the rich tradition and culture, that we are following as Sri Vaishnavites now were Sri Ramanujar's Niyamanam (i.e) we are now following the guidelines given by Sri Ramanujar for doing the Thiruvaaraadhanam, Ghosti and following the Nitya-Anusandhanams. However, Sri Vaishnavism is existing even before Sri Ramanujar. In those times, no body recognised the Tamizh Divya Prabhandams, or during the period, prior to the Azhwars, no prabhandams existed. But there certainly would have been a Sampradhayam for the Sri Vaishnavites during that period. Can anyone in our group who knows about this, enlighten me and all our other members as to how our Sri Vaishnavism was practised before Ramanujar. Is there any reference book available on this. Please do throw some light on these. Daasan Thirumalai Vinjamoor Venkatesh
Guest guest
Please refer to SM Srinivasa Chari's book on Vaishnavism for everything you want to know about Vaishnavism. I believe that according to our aachaaryas, Vaishnavism is the only true vedic religion practiced during even the rgvedic times. So, the sampradaayam existed much before Raamaanuja. -- Murali Kadambi > ---------- > TV.Venkat[sMTP:TV.Venkat] > Monday, July 06, 1998 11:08 AM > bhakti > Our Sampradhayam > > Dear Sri Vaishnavas, > > All the rich tradition and culture, that we are following as Sri > Vaishnavites now were Sri Ramanujar's Niyamanam (i.e) we are now > following the guidelines given by Sri Ramanujar for doing the > Thiruvaaraadhanam, Ghosti and following the Nitya-Anusandhanams. > > However, Sri Vaishnavism is existing even before Sri Ramanujar. Guest guest
Folowing is based on my limited understanding of our Sampradhayam: The Visistadvaita (or the Sri Sampradhaya) was practiced under a different name: BhAgavata (or EkAyana or PAncarAtra) religion. There have been lot of references to this in various Puranas and IthihAs. Sri. A Govindacarya in his groundbreaking analysis on PAncarAtra, mentions that PAdma Tatra and Vishnu Purana gives a whole lot of detail on BhAgavata Religion. In his paper (PAncarAtra or BhAgavata-Sastra, published in 1909), Sri. A Govindacarya traces the relationship between the BhAgavata religion and Sri Sampradhayam. He refers to Isvara Samhita and other works and establishes the legitimacy of the GuruParampara, the traditional respect and devotion for Sriman Narayana, followed by Sri, Senai Mudhaliyar, Nammazvar etc. There are not that many publications on this topic. Sri Krishnamachari has a series of articles published in SaraNAgati Journal. You can go to the archives form http://www.SriVaishnava.org/sgati. there is also a book by Oto Schrader (sp?) published by Adyar Library that talkes about PAncarAtra and related Samhitas. Another source may be: Pancaratra Samhitas and Early Vaisnava Theology by Mitsunori Matsubara Published by Motilal Banarsidas. if you are interested, you can download the paper by Sri A. Govindacary at a latter date form my WEB site. I am still in the process of typing it. It seems that this was the first publication on PAncarAtra to appear in a Western Journal. regards, -- Venkatesh K. Elayavalli Cypress Semiconductor Data Communications Division 3901 N. Guest guest
Sri mathe ramanujaya namaha: this has reference to the age of sri sampradayam. i would like to add some more as i so far have perceived. our sampradayam was very much exsistent during vyasa/sukha/parasara period. howevever, the connection was lost because of advent of buddism and jainisim and hindu's more insistence on rituals rather than real bakhthi it was (here we have to accept with full reverence)only Adi Sankaracharya, he started propogating hinduism(sanatana dharma) throughout the country by visits, mutts etc. alas.. he was in this world only for 32-33 years and there was lot of loose ends. Sri ramanuja had to take the fort by giving cortrect intepretation of bramha sutra/bhagwas gita .It was only because of Sri Ramanuja, there was clarity in philosophy and on the strength of it he created a system/order that we rever today as sri sampradayam(emberumanar darsanam) his job was much easier in the sense that he had the support of works of alwars/nadamuni and earlier bhagavatas. even maxmuller in his account on indian philosophy has acknowledged that Sri Ramananuja was clear in his arguments, sensible and highly devotional. further one may wonder why sampradayam did not flourish across seas.we should be aware that our earlier brahminical system, brahmins were barred from crossing seas.( buddists did a good job in this connection) best regards km narayanan ____ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
