This is a request for a suggestion on a standard edition of the

Nalayiram. I have the following requirements:

1. It should be in one volume (preferably cloth bound). I am presently

using a 2 volume edition which I find rather inconvenient.

2. It should have no typo's (pizai's) and should give variant readings

as footnotes.

3. It should give a traditional account of each alwar preferably

preceding the relevant tirumozi

4. For each alwar/tirumozi, it should give as many taniyans as

possible, mentioning the author of the taniyan

5. For each verse, the metre should be given. If ragam/talam are

given, I may be willing to relax some of the more difficult to satisfy

requirements.

6. As far as possible, one aDi of a verse should be printed in one

physical line in the printed page. For example, metres such as

eNcIrneDilaDiAciriyaviruttam are printed in two lines in many books

(with the second line slightly indented). I find this arrangement

rather cumbersome.

7. It should be printed in 12+ points which will really be an asset

8. It should have a first-word index (mutaRkuRippakarAti) for the

entire corpus of 4000

9. It should also have a list of 108 tiruppati's with details on where

it is located viz., district/taluk, distance from the nearest railhead

etc.

Needless to say, an edition satisfying all the above requirements

(except second part of #5) existed once in my parents' home but is not

to hand now. I request the distinguished members of the group to

examine the editions they are using and let me know the name and

address of the publisher. A friend of mine is planning on visiting

Srirangam so I may get a copy.

BTW, it would be useful to know if some good editions are available in

Madras itself.

I would appreciate any help in this regard from the distinguished

members of this list.

Thanks in Advance and Warm Regards.

Lakshmi Srinivas asked about Divya Prabandham editions.

The best edition, with virtually no errors, clean printing,

and identification of taniyan authors, is Sri Puttur S.

Krishnaswamy Iyengar's. It is in print and available at

the Parthasarathy Kovil bookshop in Chennai.

This edition even has one-line summaries of some of the

more esoteric paasurams, like those in Tiruviruttam. The

only defect in this edition is that the type is a little

bit small.

Puttur Swamy's efforts should be well-known to Bhakti list

members, as he is the only person presently printing the

Prabandham with the ancient maNipravALa commentaries.

T.A. Varadhan, one of our members, is actively raising funds

to support Puttur Swamy's efforts. Puttur Swamy has promptly

published the last three volumes of Tiruvaymoli commentaries

thanks in large part to Bhakti list members.

Another Prabandham edition that is very good but lacks

taniyan identification, etc., is Kidambi Natteri Vijayaraghavacharya's

edition. This publication is printed on better paper in

bigger type, but is very hard to find in Chennai.

The best edition covering all the points that you have made is

available from Puthur Sri Krishnamachariar Swamy. However regarding

point number 6, for some really big verses, it has two lines only.

This is being published by Sri Krishnamachariar Swamy who is the

editor of the Vaishnavite magazine "Sri Vaishnava Sudarsanam".

The address is No. 3, Puthur Agraharam, Tiruchi - 620 017.

I am using this book only now for my memorising and recitals.

Dear bhaktAs,

Namo NArAyanA . kindly accept adiyen's pranAmams.

This edition is compact (single volume & easy to carry) , hard bound

& good in terms of the splitting up of padams for easy recitation . No

typos, has very brief info about all AzhvArs in the beginning of the book

, all taniyans are there but without the mention of authors , no mention

of meter/rAgA/tAlam , one aDi lines etc are proper as far as adiyen

knows, good readability , has Index , but no info on 108 Divya Desams.

But , this edition also has brief info on Bhagavad RAmAnujA & SwAmi

Desikan & also Desika Prabandhams - Adaikkala Paththu , aththigiri

mahAtmyam , adhikAra sangraham , prabandasAram followed by PiLLai

andAdhI. It also has yeal sAthU , vAzhith thirunAmam of all AzhvArs &

other selected AchAryAs .

Copies are available with adiyen's father Sri K.G.Krishnan 11 Hasthigiri

St , West MAmbalam , chennai 600 033 . tel : (044) 4834676.

Books can also be had from the editor himself :

3c, IV main Rd , Vijayanagar , vaLachery , chennai - 600 042.

Basically , Prabandham classes are run in our house & this edition is

used & liked by many ( like a prescribed text book ) . adiyen also uses

this edition . The cost is only Rs.90/-.

The other book is that from LIFCO . It is more bulkier than the

previous. padam splittings are not as effecient as the previous one =>

difficult to recite for esp. beginners ( practical experience of many

).But this carries taniyan info & rAga/metre/tALA info .

I also use this excellent publication for Prabandham recitation

and learning. There are a very small number of typos -- those who

are interested in errata can contact me for a list from kOyil

thiruvaaymozhi and siRiya thirumadal, which I learnt recently

from two Prabandham-addicts from Srirangam.
