Guest guest
Dear Bhagavathas: Sri: Sri Gopala Maha Desikaya namah My wife and I had the Bhagyam of having Samshrayanam performed by His Holiness Srimad Poundareekapuram Andavan in September 1997. Before proceeding to Srirangam, I asked my father whether His Holiness will be at the Ashramam or away on Sancharam. (so we can plan our trip). My father replied that HH Andavan will always be at the Ashramam. From this I presume HH Andavan does not go out of Srirangam and is always available for sishyas. We went to the Ashramam from Tiruchi in the morning after taking bath, wearing thirumann, pancakacham and madisar respectively. HH Andavan would not grace us with Samashrayanam like that. HH asked us to go to Kollidam river which is about a mile or so from the Ashramam and have a bath there and then come for the ceremony. We did exactly as told. (Before even asking us to do this HH playfully enquired "kapi mathiramthanE sappittu vandhe? (you had only coffee in the morning, is it?)". We replied 'no, we did not have anything in the morning'. Luckily for me, I did not have my coffee nor my wife. Later I learnt that HH Andavan is particular that Samashrayanam is to be done only on empty stomach. IT is only due to HIS ANUGRAHAM I did not even feel hungry till 3 p.m. when we had food in the Ashramam, after Samashrayanam. We can not forget this experience and HH Andavan did this for us even though it was getting late in the day and he had upanyasam scheduled for that day. adiYen dAsan Lakshmanan _____________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Guest guest
Dear Bhaktas, Sri Tirukkudandai Andavan is said to have travelled all over India by pAda-yAtra or foot alone. Today, Sri Gopala Mahadesika Swami of Poundarikapuram Andavam Ashramam also is said to travel only by foot, eschewing all cars as modern conveniences not allowed by sannyAsa dharma. How do sannyAsis like this travel between cities? Is it that they only walk within a city by foot (like some Advaita sannyAsis), and use cars or other transportation for long distance travelling? I would like to know the real facts here. Of course, nearly all sannyAsis these days use cars for all their travel; Sri Gopala Desika Swami may be the lone holdout. Thanks, Mani
Guest guest
I know for sure that Srimad Andavan - tirukkudandai never got on a moving car or vehicle ever after taking sannyasa. The surprise is that during purvashramam, it seems HH andavan hardly ever walked. He was a prominent upanyasakar who was always taken to places in a good car by his devotees. After sannyasam, He walked all the way between cities and inside those cities also. It was funny when HH. 44th jeer met Tirukkudandai andavan once.. HH 44th jeer asked HH. Andavan to just hop on to the Ahobila muth Bus, just to take a look. HH. Andavan refused several times. then HH 44th jeer had to promise that He will not order the driver to start the bus. After the driver got off the vehicle, then HH Andavan got on the bus to just look around what facilities are inside and said " romba nanna irirukku vandi", and jumped out quickly so that no one was going to play a trick on him. Obviously others laughed.
