>This day celebrates the destruction of the demon Narakasura by Lord

>Krishna.It also commemorates the return of Lord Rama to Ayodya after his

>victory over Ravana, the demon King of Lanka. It is believed that

>Goddess Lakshmi appeared on this day during the churning of the milky

>ocean by the Devas and Asuras. This day is celebrated in the month of

>Karthika( October- November),on the fourteenth day of the dark

>Gangasnanam. They wear new clothes and seek the blessings of elders.

>fresh accounts. In North India, the day after Diwali is called Bhaiya

>Dij. On this day,sisters apply vermillon on the foreheads of their

>borthers and pray for them.In turn , the borthers give them gifts or

>This removal of Darkness by light symbolises the annihilation of

>ignorance within us by knowledge. It also symbolifies the triumph of

>Good over evil.
