Guest guest
Dear Vaishnavas, Hare Krishna. A good lady recently asked me about the significance of Karthigai for Vaishnavas. Any one could help shed some light on the basis of Alvar Pasurams, etc. ? Also, the Shivaites celebrate this by burning sokappan, commemorating Lord Shiva's appearing as a jyoti to settle the dispute between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu as to who the supreme is. This of course is not accepted by sattvika puranas and those who follow them, ie. the Vaishnavas. What is the Vaishnava opinion on this, with due reference to authentic scriptural sources ? Guest guest
Dear Krishna Kalale Prabhu, Hare Krishna. I never said that it is indicated by any Purana. As far as I know, those who follow the sad agamas do not accept anything that is against the Supremacy of Narayana. The incident pertaining to the jyoti of Lord Shiva is a Shaivite account often related to kartikai, sokappan and Thiruvannaamalai. Only God knows from where if has come from, if at all it is present somewhere supposedly authentic in the first place. It appears in the verses of the Nayanmars etc. and the claim (note : I am not making a definitive statement here) is that it is in some Purana. I would like to verify if this is true, ie. I want to get to the bottom of this account. If it is so, where does it appear and why is it not acceptable shastrically ? If this is not true, how did it actually come about ? This is what exactly what I want to know. That is why I have asked the question in the first place. Please enlighten me. Your servant, R. Guest guest
Dear Sri Jaisimman: There are a lot of references directly and indirectly to the TejOmaya Moorthy , Sriman NaarAyaNA as Agni SvarUpan in AzhwAr's Paasurams and Vedhams . Since no one has responded to your query sofar, I will write about these references next week to provide a perspective. best wishes, V.Sdaagopan At 10:39 AM 11/25/99 +0800, you wrote: >Dear Vaishnavas, > >Hare Krishna. > >A good lady recently asked me about the significance of Karthigai for >Vaishnavas.Any one could help shed some light on the basis of Alvar Pasurams, etc. ? > >Also, the Shivaites celebrate this by burning sokappan, commemorating Lord >Shiva's appearing as a jyoti to settle the dispute between Lord Brahma and >Lord Vishnu as to who the supreme is.
