Dear Sri Kannan, Thanks for your very informative note. As per my understanding, it is only in Srirangam that there is a "thirunedundhaaNdakam thirunaaL", which occurs a day before the beginning of the pagal patthu utsavam. This does not occur in other Divya Desams for the following reason. Sri Parasara Bhattar, in the process of defeating the great Vedanti Madhavacharyar of Karnataka in debate and convincing him to join our sampradAya, used the truths contained in the thirty verses of Thirumangai Alvar's "thirunedundhaaNdhakam". Upon Bhattar' triumphant return to Srirangam, Periya Perumaal Lord Ranganatha asked Bhattar how he was able to defeat as great a scholar as Madhavacharya. Bhattar explained that it was through the thirunedundhaaNdakam, and Perumaal immediately asked Bhattar to recite those verses in front of Him. It happened to be one day before the pagal patthu Arambham, so in Srirangam alone, there is a special recitation of the thirunedundhaaNdakm before the regular adhyayana utsavam begins, because of Bhattar's great service in converting Madhavacharyar into "Nanjeeyar". This is what I have heard Sri Velukkudi Varadacharyar Swami say in an upanyAsam on the thirunedundhaaNdaka divya shastram. adiyEn raaamaanuja daasan Mani
Guest guest
Sri: Last year, Tirumalai-Tirupathi Devasthanam released Nalayira Divya Prabandam audio cassettes (70) for Rs 2000. The package in a suitcase includes Nalayira Divya Prabandam, Upadesaratnamalai and Thiruvoimozhi nootrandathi pasurams and a book containing the text. There is also description of Sevas in Tirumalai and Tirupathi in the book. From the book, adiYen want to write only about Adyayana Utsavam in Tirumalai. Adhyayana Utsavam used to be held for 23 days in Tirumala. This is usually held from the night of AmAvAsya preceding Vaikunta Ekadasi in Dhanurmasa. After evening Thomala Seva and neivedyam, Malayappaswami with His Consorts will be placed in Tirumamani Mandapa, facing east in the Divya Simhasanam. In the absence of Nammalwar's idol in Tirumala, the vigraha of Nammalwar's Acharya Sri Senapathi Alwar will be placed facing south near Simhasanam. Sri Ramanuja also will be seated facing south in that Mandap. After nivedya, Jeer Swami and Adyapakas recite the first hymn and last two hymns in each Andadi. i.e., from Mudal Thiruvandadi to Tiruviruttam. Pagal Pathu Day Morning Night 1st Recitation of Iyarpa in full Tiruppallandu, Vannamadangal 2nd Perialwar Tirumozhi first, second decad Senniyongu 3rd Remaining hymns in Perialwar Vinnelamelappu Tirumozhi 4th Tiruppavai,Nachiar Tirumozhi Ooneru Selvathu 5th from Perumal Tirumozhi to Vadinen, Taye Tandi in Kanninumchiruththambu Peria Thirumozhi 6th 1st, 2nd centum in Peria Tirumozhi Vadamarudhidai 7th 3rd, 4th centum ,, ,, Pandainanmarai 8th 5th,6th,7th centum ,, ,, Thelliyeer 9th 8th, 9th centum ,, ,, ,, Kadil Kadipittu 10th 10th &11th centum ,, ,, Tirukurunthamdakam Tirunedumthandakam Sattumurai in Perialwar Tirumozhi, Peria Tirumozhi & Tirunedumdandakam Erappathu (Evening Session) During Erappathu, beginning with Thiruppallandu, each decad from Thiruvoymozhi will be recited, and on 10th night sattumurai will be held. The next day - night Kanninumchiruththambu will be recited separately. The next night Ramanuja Nootrandadi and Upadesaratnamalai and in Sathumurai, Iyalchattu, Vazhi Tirunamam will be recited. With this Adhyayana Utsavam comes to end. Hence, Malayappaswami will have Adhyayana Utsavam for 23 days. The very next day, Adhyayana Utsavam for Varahaswami will be done by reciting Koil Thiruvoy- mozhi.
