Dear Shree Kasturi Varadarajan,

Description of this state *in terms of* the following

categories which are well-defined in our philosophy is

in brief given below:

1. The jiva, with its svarupa-jnana

Jaagrat : No change

Swapna : No Change

Sushupti : No Change

Moorcha : No Change

2. The jiva's dharma-bhuta-jnana

Jaagrat : As per its Karma

Swapna : As per its Karma but cannot be used

Sushupti : As per its Karma but cannot be used

Moorcha : As per its Karma but cannot be used

3. mind

Jaagrat : In full usable condition

Swapna : Partially

Sushupti : No use

Moorcha : No use

4. Indriyas

Jaagrat : In full usable condition

Swapna : No use

Sushupti : No use

Moorcha : No use

5. The gross body

Jaagrat : In full usable condition

Swapna : Can move his body but not under his control

Sushupti : No use

Moorcha : No use

6. External world

Jaagrat : Jeeva Can sense the external world

Swapna : Jeeva Cannot sense the external world

Sushupti :Jeeva Cannot sense the external world

Moorcha :Jeeva Cannot sense the external world

7. Isvara

Jaagrat : Jeeva Can communicate with him in YOGA or If Iswara is willing.

Swapna : Jeeva Can communicate with him If Iswara is willing otherwise not

but swapna is created by Iswara and not by Jeeva

Sushupti :Jeeva cannot communicate with Iswara but is in union with Iswara

Moorcha : Jeeva cannot communicate with Iswara

Please note that in all the four stages, (Jaagrat, Swapna, Sushupti and

Moorcha) the Jeeva is under the control of the Iswara only. The Iswara

does not experience these four stages though He is always with the Jeeva.

That is why in the Brahma Sutra, after explaining these four stages of

the Jeeva, Veda Vyasa has commenced the "Ubhyalingaadhikaranam" where

Vyasa identifies the Iswara - Shreeman Naaraayana with two identifications

that are

1. Iswara is attributed with infinite divine qualities

(Ananta Kalyanaa Gunaakaratvam)

2. Iswara is untouched by all impurities

(Akila Heya Pratyaneekatvam)

Please do get back to me if you have any doubts regarding this.

Thanks & Regards

M.S.HARI Raamaanuja Daasa
