Sri:

SrimatE Gopaladesika MahadesikAya Namaha,

Dearest Bhagawathas,

Sri Muralidhar Rangaswami had sent this personal e-mail to me (the content

of which is given below). It is his excellent aubhavam, supplementing to

adiyEn's ramble on Periya Thirumozhi 9.1. His reference to Vedic hymns and

Swamy Desikan's sthOthrams vis-a-vis the pAsuram's meanings is enjoyable. I

only want all of you to share my enjoyment of reading his nice post.

Thanks, Sri Murali. I feel I need to write such ramble more often, so that

it brings out such great posts.. After all, my translations can be poor.

(and wrong too); But the pAsurams are Nam Kaliyan's.. Aren't they?

Regards

========================

Dear Sriman Madhavakkannan Swamin,

Adiyen thoroughly enjoyed your summary of Kaliyan's wonderful

verses. Each verse is profound and pregnant with meaning. Kindly permit

Adiyen to share a few ramblings.

The three Agnis referred to in verse 1 are Ahavaneeyam,

Gaarhapathyam, and DakshiNagni. The connection of this salutation to the

Chakram in the Lord's right hand becomes instantly apparent. In the

Sudarshana Ashtakam, Swami Desikan extols the Chakram as

"Savanatejastrayeemaya" indicating the abov aspects. The Azhwar seems to

suggest that people well versed in the three Agnis are present at this

Kshetram only on account of the Lord's right hand bearing the Chakram.

Verse 2 is again a brilliant illustration of the Pida Pariharam

( for Bhaktas) and Pida Pradanam (for Dushtas) aspects of the

Lord's Sudarshana Chakram. In an Upanyasam, U.Ve. Sri Mukkur

Lakshminarasimhachariar Swamin alluded to the fact that the

Gandharva, Hu Hu, was blessed with Moksham on account of clinging to the

foot of a Bhagavata (Gajendra). In fact, Hu Hu was granted Moksham even

before Gajendra himself! Such is the Lord's love for His Bhagavatas.

Verse 3 is a marvellous salutation of the Matsya Avataram. H.H.

Sri Rangapriya Mahadesikan Swami blessed Adiyen a few years back

with the Salagramam of Matsya Murthy. At this time, H.H. said "Matsya

murthy alone causes the waters of MahapraLaya and at the same

time is capable of tiding over these waters. This is indicated in the

Narayana Upanishad salutations NarayaNE PravartantE NarayaNE

PraleeyantE".

Verse 4 provides a glimpse of the great Prowess of Lord Varaha.

In the Vamana Avataram, the Lord had to take two giant steps in

order to cover the entire Universe (Bhumi Piratti). However, Varaha

effortlessly held Bhumi Devi on his tusk. The union between

Lord Varaha and Bhumi Piratti immediately brings to mind His

role as Yajna Varahan. In this context, it may be noted that Bhumi

Piratti is glorified as "ShrungE ShrungE YajnE YajnE

VibhishaNII" in the Bhu Sooktam. The Yajna referred to here is that of

protecting those who perform Prapatti at the feet of the Divine Couple.

This Yajna is performed by the Lord. Bhumi Piratti lends her support

to the Lord in this Yajna by rendering the yaaga shala fertile

through her appeal to the Lord to forgive the sins committed by the

supplicant. This verse also reminds Adiyen of the Varaha Charma

Shlokam. Swami Desikan has blessed us with a most beautiful

commentary "Rahasya ShikhamaNi" on the Varaha Charma Shlokam. Srikaryam

Swami of Our Ashramam has splendidly summarized this work in Kannada.

5. This verse reminds Adiyen of the Vamana Avataram which

blessed us with the sacred Ganges river. Swami Desikan magnificently

salutes this aspect in verse 85 of the Daya Shatakam. The elevated,

exalted, eternal protection offered by the Trivikrama Padhukas is very

much like the Ganga river, which cleanses all who bathe in it,

regardless of caste, creed, sex, background or attainment. The

other important facet of the Trivikrama Padhuka is that it strikes a

telling blow to the pride of the arrogant ones (who show

disrespect) and at the same time elevates the humble supplicant. It may be

remembered that Mahabali contemptuously ridiculed Vamana for the

latter's request of 3 paces of land. In two paces the Lord took

possession of all of Bali's acquisitions, leaving no room for

the third pace! When Mahabali reverentially offered his head as the

resting place for the third pace, he was blessed with Moksham.

6. This verse reminds Adiyen of Swami Desikan's anubhavam of

Parashurama in verse 86 of the Daya Shatakam. The blood from 21 generations

of Kshtriyas is described by our paramacharyan as an alankaram of vermillon

on Parashurama.

7. This verse reminds Adiyen of the Rama Charma Shlokam. Related

references from Swami Desiukan's works include "Sakrut Prapanna

janasamrakshaNa dIkshitha" from the Mahavira Vaibhavam and

"Sakruda vEkshaNAth tath kshaNAth" from the Daya Shatakam.

8. Verses 8 and 9 remind Adiyen of the Vishwaroopa darshanam,

exhibited by our Lord, as extolled in the Purusha Sooktam. It

also brings to mind the 32 syllabled Charma Shlokam, which is the

condensed essence of all Brahma Vidyas, which contain Upasanas for

attaining our Dear Lord.

Thank You very much for a most stimulating post which stirred up

these reflections in Adiyen. Please pardon Adiyen for his indulgence.

Namo Narayana,

SriMuralidhara Dasan
