Appeal for financial assistance to publish Vol. 2 of Sri Bhashyam with lucid

commentary by Sri U. Ve Perukkaranai Chakravarthy Acharya Swamy.

About the Author:

Sri U. Ve P.M. Chakvarthyacharya Swamy is now the resident Acharya of

Desika Bhavanam, Mylapore, Chennai. Sri Swamy studied Niyaya Siromani in

Tirupati (1944), specialised in Tarka, Vedanta and Sahitya under Uthamoor

Sri Veeraraghavachar, Sri D.T.Thathacharya Swamy, Sri Neelameghachar and

Ramanatha Sastrigal. He then came under the tutelage of the Scholar-saint

H.H 42nd Jeer (Injimedu) Azhagiasingar. He was a teacher & later the

Principal of Madhurantakam Sanskrit College established by that Jeer. Being

the Asthana Vidvan of Ahobila Mutt, he is called upon to be examiner and

chief coordinator of many a vidvat sadas. The Jeer conferred the title

'Sarasaragna' in recognition of the scholarship and expository skills in the

Grantha Chatushtayam. Drawing upon his years of experience as a teacher for

imparting instruction in Ubhaya Vedanta lore to students / asthikas at all

levels in a traditional way, Sri Bhashya Chandrika has been written taking

into its fold the merits of all earlier commentaries.

About Shri Bhashyam and the Commentary:

"Sri Bhashya” is by no means an easy text- verily the despair of those who

have no grounding in sanskrit language and in sastras like Nyaya, Vaisesika,

Mimamsa, Vyakarana and the Agama literature. “Swami has made this work

simple enough for the layman demonstrating his expository skills and

methodical perfection without giving up the flavour of the tradition” -

observes Dr. M. Narasimhachary, Professor and Head, Dept of Vaishnavism,

University of Madras, in his foreword to the first volume of Sri Bhashyam

text and the commentary being released in the first week of June. Sri Swamy

has authored several works both in Sanskrit and Tamil. Mention should be

made of his Tamil work "MummathaSAram"- a brilliant comparative study of

Advaita, Dvaita and Vishishtadvaita.

The Project:

The second volume of the commentary needs a financial assistance of about

Rs. 1.5 lakhs (about $3500). Cost of paper alone accounts for 40% of the

total cost. Asthikas are requested to contribute their mite for this noble

cause so that each one of them can proudly possess an invaluable text &

commentary.

Remittances can be made to my daughter Smt. Vaidehi Venkatakrishnan, 77

Wyman Street Apt E, Waban, MA 02468, to be remitted to the revered author in

Chennai. Alternatively, cheques may also be sent individually or

collectively and mailed to Sri.P.M. Chakravarthyacharya, Sri. Desika

Bhavanam, 27, Venkatesa agraharam, Mylapore, Chennai 600 004. Contributors

of $ 50 dollars will be presented with one copy of Vol. 1 now being released

and one copy of Vol. 2 when published. Their assistance will be

appropriately acknowledged.

We request all of you to actively participate in this kainkaryam and be a

part of preserving our age old texts and encouraging literary commentary.

Sincerely,

K. Venkatakrishnan

**********************************************************************

Contributors of $100 will receive a copy of both (Vol2 available when

published).

We need 35 people to contribute $100 each or 70 people to contribute $50

each. Your contributions are very much welcome. I will take personal

responsibility to deliver the books to the donors. I am planning on a trip

to India this August and hope to present this whole amount to Shri Swamy and

bring the copies of the books with me when I come back.

Regards,

Raja Krishnasamy

Dear Sri Raja Krishnaswamy :

Sri U.Ve. Perukkaranai ChakravathyAcchAr Swamy

is a giant oak with roots deep in the Sri Matam

sampradhaayam and a living legend as a great

scholar with links to four revered Jeeyars of

Ahobila matam ( HH 42nd to 45th Jeeyars) .

It will be a privelege foradiyEn to support this project

in the context of the other laudable efforts to bring out

the great commentaries of AchAryAs and Scholars

for the benefit of us all , who do not have the traditional

KaalakshEpam route available to us as faraway residents

of USA and other sites away from our AchAryALs.

The plans to reprint and release Abhinava Desikan ,

Sri UtthamUr Swamy's granthams is a very major effort

that is underway in this context .

It will be helpful if Srimathi Nagu Satyan could

transmit these funds as Tax free donations.

AdiyEn would also like to make an important appeal

for the consideration of our Sri Viashnava groups .

When we make these pledges to support such kaimkaryams ,

it would be immensely helpful to prakrutham AchAryAs

of one's own AchArya paramparais were to receive an AchArya

SambhAvanai in the spirit of thankfulness to the illustrious

blessings that they have conferred on us out for their KaaruNyam .

>From here on , AdiyEn would like to pledge to match dollar

for dollar any pledge that adiyEn makes for causes like this one

to adiyEn's own AchAryan for use in kaimkaryams close

to His ThiruvuLLam . This pledge of mine is made public NOT to

put the spotlight on adiyEn , but to appeal to you

to support kaimkaryams related to your own AchAryAls

in the overall context of support for other laudable

Kaimkaryams of your choice . This way , we will

have the double benefit of supporting a kaimkaryam

of our choice and at the same time support our

AchAryALs . Some cases , both will converge.

AdiyEn has made four pledges in the past few days:

(1) ThoLukkiniyAn for Thuppul PiLLai on behalf of

the Thuppul Trust (2) Sri UtthamUr Swamy's granthams

release (3)The pledge for HH Poundarikapuram Asramam

RohiNi celebrations for the Month of Kaarthikai (December 11)

in the context of His sathAbhishEka MahOthsavam

celebrations in the presence of Four great prakrutham

AchAryAs in March 2001 and ((4) Sri BhAshyam commentary

release announced today by Sri Raja KrishNaswamy .

AdiyEn has set side these matching funds($460) to transmit

to my revered AchAryan and humbly appeal to you all to

consider full or partial matching support dollars for our

AchAryALs , who face a lot of difficulties in meeting

the day to day expenses of running their matams and carrying

on their hoary traditions in the most sampradhAyic manner .

Our eternal gratitude should always be to them .In this

context , adiyEn has to accept the fact that adiyen can not

support an appeal unles adiyEn can provide the concomitant

matching funds to adiyEn's own AchAryan.

Dear Bhakti members,

I would like you to please note some minor changes in

the following post that appeared yesterday:

1. ".... to be remitted to the author" should read

".... to be remitted to the Desika Bhavanam". The

very reason for the appeal is to raise money for

publication and as such the money collected will be

remitted to the Desika Bhavanam and is at their

disposal.

2. My father signed off as "Ramanujadasan, K.

Venkatakrishnan" which inadvertently did not get

included.

3. If you need any further clarification in this

matter, you are welcome to contact my father. Please

email/call us and we will be happy to give the contact

information.

It has been a very long time since I wrote a mail to

the Bhakti list. For a couple of years, due to various

committments and the voluminous mails pourin into

Bhakti, I could not keep up with all the material that

appeared. I have recently red, but still get

to read only a part of the mails. However, it is

gratifying to see how well Mani has grown this net and

sincere thanks to all the contributors.

Dear Bhakti members,

With deep apologies, I wish to mention that the

address for payments as stated in Shri. Raja

Krishnasamy's original mail on this subject stands

correct. I had sent a follow up mail stating that the

remittances should be made to Desika Bhavanam. That

apparently is in error. The clarification stems from a

conversation Shri Anand Karalapakkam had with my

father recently. I am quoting the relevant segment of

Shri. Raja Krishnasamy's original mail below for

information.

I would like to take this opportunity to appeal again

for the cause of raising money to publish Volume 2 of

the commentary in Sanskrit for Sri Bhasyam, by Shri U.

Ve P.M. Chakvarthyacharya Swamy, who is the resident

acharya of Shri Desika Bhavanam, Chennai. We were

hoping for a very enthusiastic response and have only

a few pledges so far. Please spread the word around.

Please note that Swamigal is directly supervising the

efforts to bring out this publication and hence direct

remittances to him. However, no part of the money goes

to him as renumeration.
