Guest guest
Dear All, Jai Sreemannarayana!!! With great love and complete surrender to the Lotus feet of my acharya, this is an attempt to translate some of the sargas in Sundara Kanda Tattva Deepika authored by U.Ve Sriman Sri Bhasyam Appalacharya Swamivaru is being made as time permits. Currently I am in Sarga 22nd and here is a brief translation. Om Namaha Parama Rushibyaha namaha parama rushibhyaha. Raghu Ramanuja Dasa - Sundara Kanda Sarga 22 ====================== In great pain, crying and shivering chaste Seethamma while concentraing on Her husband Lord Rama responded to Ravana's "utterings". Seethamma kept a grass blade in between her and Ravana and with great humility humble Seetha responded to Ravana. Q) What is the significance of keeping a grass blade in between her and Ravana before talking to him? 1. Seethamma was "Pativrata". It is a practise not to talk to other men without some sought of physical block. So Seethamma made sure that the rule was not broken. 2. Seethamma wanted to hint Ravana that even a blade of grass has the right to talk to her but not Ravana himself. 3. Seethamma wanted to tell Ravana that if he does not listen to her he will be destroyed like the dry grass blade. 4. When Lord Rama wanted to teach Kakasura a lesson he used a grass blade as a weapon against Kakasura which made him go around the three worlds and finally had to fall on their feet. Seethamma wanted to hint Ravana that if he does not listen to what she says he will be in the same plight. Seethamma is none other than the Mother of this Universe. Not only this uiverse but the entire creation of the God. In that case Ravana is also her son. If a son utters stupid words due to ignorance to his Mother, due to the "va:tsalyam" in a mom she will never get any kind of anger. Even after Ravana uttered words which he shouldn't have, Seethamma never got angry at him. Seethamma smiles at Ravana and says "you are seeking for things that you are not supposed to. You seem to have lost all your intelligence. I feel sorry for you. Just like a small kid tries to carry things which he can't, just like a small kid tries to eat things that he cannot, you are seeking for things which are inappropriate". The smile of Seethamma tells us how we should react to Rakshasha like people who try to act like Kabandhas and cheat others and create misuderstanding among and also between people and their own Acharya. Seethamma says to Ravana, "Divert your mind away from me. Keep your mind on your own folks. When a person who does lot of faults (pa:pam) cannot attain siddhi, in the same way you will never attain me". The above said words are like a great Mantropadesam to us. We ( Atama ) are the property of the Parama:tma. We think we are independent but we are not. When we think we are independent we are equal to none other than Ravana himself. Everything in this world belongs to Pa:ramatma. Even the external Prakruthi ( Nature ) belongs to Him. The inner Jeeva ( Soul ) is his too. But since we are filled with ignorance just like Ravana, we think "This is mine. I did this. If it were not for my attempts and hardwork things would have been different and everything you see isall because of me and my efforts". Seethamma can be equated to our Soul which is Bhagavan's property. The reason why we get this Svatantra buddhi ( thoughts of independence) is because of our Mannas. Our Mannas is like a tortoise. If someone tries to kill a tortoise with a stick he or she cannot. The secret is he should overturn the tortise and in one blow the tortise sees it's end. Similarly we should overturn "manaha" which will make it "namaha". "Na" means Mine. and "Ha" means Not. So when one utters "namaha" it means "not mine". If one constatly chants this while thinking that "Everything belongs to the Lord; I belong to God" then Manas will lose it's Ravana like Nature. ........
