dear bhAgavathAs,

smt. lakshmi had raised this question re: a pAsuram in naimisAraNyam

pathikam of kalyan's periya thirumozhi -

> In this paasuram Alwar says "Naan Udai ThavaththAl

> Thiruvadi Adainthen".

>

> Alwar being a PRAPANNAR(Akinchanar), how should bethe

> above phrase interpreted.

srI. jagadAchArya simhAsanAdhipadhi, prativAdhi bayankaram

aNNaNgarAchAriAr svAmi, in his padavurai of this pAsuram,

gives the meaning of thavam in this line to mean bhAgyam -

i.e. nAn udaith thavaththAl thiruvadi adaindhEn is given

as "(ippOdhu) ennudaiya bhAgyaththinAl thiruvadivAraththil

vandhu sErap peRREn".

Now, there is a significance to the word ippOdhu above, as well as

why thavam is interpreted as bhAgyam - In the second line of

the pAsuram, kaliyan says "thAn udaik kurambaip piriyum bOdhu

undhan saraNamE saraNam enRu irundhEn" - i.e. indha kudisai pONra

sarIraththai vittup piriyum kAlaththil unnudaiya thiruvadigaLe

rakshakamAga vENum enRu ninaiththu irundhEn -

So, thirumangai AzhvAr first desired that at the time of leaving

this body, he needed to have the attitude of saraNAgathi towards

perumAL - However, due to his (kaliyan's) bhAgyam (of course,

entirely due to the nirhEtuka krupA of perumAL) of receiving

perumAL's grace, he reached naimisAraNyam and the attitude of

feeling of complete surrender at dEvarAjan's thirvadi in

naimisAraNyam.

- all misinterpretations and/or incorrect information in the above

write-up is adiyEn's and adiyEn's only -

AzhvAr emperumAnAr jIyar thiruvadigaLE saraNam,

adiyEn madhurakavi dAsan,

thirumalai anandAnpiLLai varadhan
