Dear bhAgavathas

Koti Namaskaram.

I need a help from our vast group of great learned, bhAgavatha bHaktas, on the

following:

1. When we offer our sambhavana to a scholar, a vedavith or a bhAgavatha we

are expected to render slokas before offering acharya dhakshina, vastram etc

thanking and invoking their blessings after the lecture series or say a saptAha

utsavam. May I know which are the appropriate slokas, and from where I could

get the same?

2. When a Sanyasin has to be offered sambhavana similar to the above, what

is the appropriate sAmpradhAic sloka or mantras to be recited prior to offering

the sambhavana ?

Is it possible for me to know the source, or better still, the mantras

themselves ? Kindly enlighten Adiyaen

Namaskaram

Adiyaen

Mani

I am not quite sure about the Sambhaavanai Mantrams, but here

are the veda anuvaakams that are usually recited when

eulogizing acharya roopams and during the occasions when

they are being recognized (may be during the Sambhaavana also)

If the person is a grihasta, the appropriate anuvaakam

are from the Taittiriya Upanishad

"aanando brahmeti vyajaanaat.h .

aanandaadhyeva khalvimaani bhuutaani jaayante .

aanandena jaataani jiivanti .

aanandaM prayantyabhisa.nvishantiiti .

saishhaa bhaargavii vaaruNii vidyaa .

parame vyomanpratishhThitaa .

sa ya evaM veda pratitishhThati .

annavaanannaado bhavati .

mahaanbhavati prajayaa pashubhirbrahmavarchasena .

mahaan.h kiirtyaa .. "

For sanyaasis, the following is recited from the

Chaturtha Prasna of Yajurveda MahaNaaraayanopanishad:

"na karmaNaa na prajayaa dhanena tyaagenaike amR^itatvamaanashuH .

pareNa naaka.n nihita.n guhaayaaM bibhraajate yadyatayo vishanti ..

vedaantavij~naanavinishchitaarthaaH sa.nnyaasayogaadyatayaH shuddhasattvaaH

..

te brahmaloke tu paraantakaale paraamR^itaaH parimuchyanti sarve ..

dahra.n vipaapa.n varaveshmabhuuta yat puNDariikaM puramadhyasa{\m+}stham.h

..

tatraapi dahre gagana.n vishoka.n tasmin yadantastadupaasitavyam.h

yo vedaadau svaraH prokto vedaante cha pratishhThitaH .

tasya prakR^itiliinasya yaH paraH sa maheshvaraH .."

All errors are mine in this postings

Normally the section beginning with 'caraNam pavitram vitatam

purANam' is recited for householders or brahmacharins. Perhaps

sometimes the Taittiriya Anandavalli is recited as

well, as Rajeev writes above.

>From what I have been taught, 'na karmaNa, na prajayA ...'

should be recited only for sannyasis and not for acharyas

such as Nammalvar or Swami Desika. The reason is that

strictly speaking that sentence applies to a renunciate

and not others.

The above sloka-s are used when we receive a sanyaasin with

puurNakumbham and I am not sure they are relevant for sambhaavana - I

am not even sure sambhaavana is the right term for a sanyaasin

although it involves samyak bhaavana in offering something. Normally

we offer biksha that includes not necessarily food and paada puuja

that involves seva and kainkaryam -

- there is also a sloka -that start with

raajaadhi rajaH ...

Dear Sri Sadananda,

Your point is well made but I think it is customary in the

tradition of Bhagavad Ramanuja to denote this as sambhAvana

even for a sannyAsi; this is presumably because the sannyAsi

is in the position of an achArya and therefore sambhAvana is

due him.

I believe this is used as the sambhAvana mantra for the Lord.

With regards,

Mani
