Guest guest
namo narayana!! namaskAram to all, i am a member of the list for quite some time and i am having a doubt. when we do sankalpam while performing we say "bhAratha varshE bhAratha khandE" when we perform it in India isnt it? and what would that phrase has to changed to if we live in "USA and CANADA". any input in this matter would be much appreciated. i want the change in phrase for both these countries as i live in canada but my family actually lives in the US. adiyen Ramanuja dasan Sudharshan Santhanam namo narayana!! Guest guest
Dear Bhagavatas: This point has been raised and answered several times. Given below are excerpts from Chapter 21 "Evolution and Dissolution if Matter - Space - Time triad" of my book "Hinduism Rediscovered" archived at "www.Srivaishnava.org/sgati". For more details, please click on Saranagathi Vol.2 Issues 15 to 20 (from February 5th to 10th, 1997)============================================== "The Sankalpa which every Hindu makes while initiating any religious practice, invariably refers to the exact locale where the rite is performed with reference to the Hindu Cosmology. ( e.g.) In India, the locale part of the Sankalpa would be as follows : Jambudveepe In the isle of the rose apple Bharata Varshe In the region called Bharata Varsha Bharatah Khande In the continent of Bharata etc. Those doing the rites in the U.S.A, adopt the same as follows:- Ramanaka Varshe In the region called Ramanaka Varsha Aindra Khande In the continent called Aindra Rocky - mickelny Parvatayor Madhye : Between the mountains of Rockey and MickelnyMisissipi- Missouri Ityadhi Aneka Shodasa Jeeva Nadeenam sameepa stite : the place that is surrounded by such perenniel rivers like Mississipi , Missouri and 16 other rivers" =============================================================== There is, however. a view that the entire universe of ours is south of Meru maountain. Hence, the Sankalpam should say "MerO DakshinE pArsvE" For Canada, you may have to substitute the mountains and rivers nearest to your place. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Dear Sriman Anbil Mama, I wish to get some more clarification in this matter. You wrote: ">Ramanaka Varshe In the region called Ramanaka Varsha > Aindra Khande In the continent called Aindra > Rocky - mickelny Parvatayor Madhye : Between the mountains of Rockey and MickelnyMisissipi- Missouri Ityadhi Aneka Shodasa Jeeva Nadeenam sameepa stite" This would affect the lagu and guru prasthanam and thereby rendering the chandas invalid for the sankalpam. This would be a violation of the vyakarana sutras of Panini. I have heard that North American continent is refered to as go- theertha kandam in the Vishnu Puranam. Could someone please check this up? Please do not mistake my questions. I would like to know what substitution we should use during sankalpam so that the chandas is not violated. Regards, Malolan
Guest guest
Dear Makolan: So far as I am concerned, I recite "Bhaaratha Varshe, Bharatah Khande, Mero: DaksinE paasvE" as also the version used in most temples in USA by way of abundant caution. Can you or any other knowledgeable Bhagavata quote the Pramanam for your statement "North American continent is referred to as go-theertha kandam in the Vishnu Puranam" I do not remember to have seen any such reference in Vishnu Puranam. dasoham Anbil Ramaswamy >"Malolan Cadambi" <mcadambi >bhakti-list >Re: important doubt >Mon, 30 Jul 2001 21:41:21 -0000 > >Dear Sriman Anbil Mama, > >I wish to get some more clarification in this matter. > >You wrote: > >">Ramanaka Varshe In the region called Ramanaka Varsha > > Aindra Khande In the continent called Aindra > > Rocky - mickelny Parvatayor Madhye : Between the mountains of >Rockey and MickelnyMisissipi- Missouri Ityadhi Aneka Shodasa Jeeva >Nadeenam sameepa stite" > >This would affect the lagu and guru prasthanam and thereby rendering >the chandas invalid for the sankalpam.
