Guest guest
Respected members, I am looking for the answer to the origin of some scriptures which I understand are part of the Puranas. Yet I do not know for certain which of the Puranas it is refered to. I want to know which of the Puranas contain the Srimad Bhagavatam, which includes the Gita and in which Puranas is the Mahabarata encountered? What is the difference between the Srimad Bhagavatam and the Bhagavata Purana. If you could kindly provide the answer to this question you are thanked in advance. Regards, B.S. Guest guest
srImathE rAmAmujAya namaha srImadh varavara munayE namah Dear Sri B.S Srimadh Bhagavatham or Bhagavatha purana, is by itself a purANa. The purANAs are 18 in number of which 6 are sAtvic in nature, 6 are rAjasic in nature and 6 are tAmasic in nature. Srimadh bhAgavatham or bhAgavatha purANA is one of the sAtvic purANAs. They both are one and the same. mahAbhArathA is not contained in any purANA. It is called IthihAsA. IthihAsA means "it happened thus". Yes, both rAmAyaNA and mahAbhArathA are true recordings (eye witness account) of what happened during that time. And gItA is a part of this mahAbhArathA. The IthihAsAs take much pride in that, they are considered even worthier than the purANAs. The reason being that, in purANAs, there is a classification of sAtvic, rAjasic and tAmasic purANAs and these are said to have emerged when BrahmA was in that particular state of mind. So for a prAmANam (100% proof) we have to consider only the sAtvic purANAs, the foremost of them being Sri Vishnu purANA, which is called by Sri ALavandAr as "purANa ratnam". Looking at IthihAsAs, they just talk nothing but truth and hence takes priority over the purANAs. This is brought out beautifully in Sri Vachana BhooshaNam, a very authentic rahasya grantham of Swamy PiLLai lOkAchAriar , as "vEdArtham aRudhiyiduvadhu smruthi, ithihAsa purANangaLAlE" (the meanings of the vEdAs can be understood clearly from 1. smruthis, 2. IthihAsam & 3. purANam. The great AchAryan of Sri Vishnu Himself, Sri maNavALa mAmunigaL, in his vyAkhyAnam (explanation) for the above sUtra of Sri vachana bhooshaNam explains what I have written in the 3rd para above. Hence what I wrote is only a reproduction of what the greatest AchArya ever, explained. Guest guest
Dear Sri B.S. / Members, Here is my limited understanding. Srimad Ramayana by Sage Valmiki and Mahabharatha by Sage Vyasa are not classified as Puranas. They are considered ithihAsAs or great epics. As regards Sri Bhagavad Gita, it is part of Mahabharatha - and represents the most enlightening conversation between Lord Sri Krishna and Arjuna. There are 18 major Puranas, and among them, Vishnu, Varaha, Vamana, Matsya, Kurma, Srimad Bhagavatha and Garuda Puranas are considered relevant to Sri Vaishnavam/VisistAdvaitam. Sri Vishnu Purana is by Sage Parasara, (Vyasa's father). Srimad Bhagavada Purana is often simply known as Srimad Bhagavatam and is by Vyasa. 18 Puranas: 1. Vishnu Purana 2. Varaha Purana 3. Vamana Purana 4. Kurma Purana 5. Matsya Purana 6. Srimad Bhagavada(m) Purana 7. Garuda Purana 8. Narada Purana 9. Agni Purana 10. Brahma Purana 11. Padma Purana 12. Brahmanda Purana 13. Brahmavaivartaka Purana 14. Bhavishya Purana 15. Linga Purana 16. Markandeya Purana 17. Siva Purana 18. Guest guest
Dear BS, Your questions I am looking for the answer to the origin of some scriptures which I understand are part of the Puranas. Yet I do not know for certain which of the Puranas it is refered to. I want to know which of the Puranas contain the Srimad Bhagavatam, which includes the Gita and in which Puranas is the Mahabarata encountered? My points I believe the scriptures that you are refering to is the vedas. The vedas was given by the lord himself. In Srimad Bhagavatham it is stated that tene brahma hrdaya, Brahma was taught the veads by heart by the superene Lord. Vedic knowledge was then passed down thru discpilic succession Eg Brahma sampradaya, Rudra Sampradaya, Sri Sampradaya and Kumara Sampradaya. In Gita Krishna states that he is the source of vedas and from the vedas he is to be known vedais ca savair aham eva vedaah (check the verse from Gita). In the begining of the 4th chapter of Gita Krishna clearly describes these iman vivasvate yogam proktavan ....... In Dwapara yuga, Srila Vyasa complied the vedas. he knew that people in kali yuga are manda sumanda matayo mandah bhagyo hi uparudah or they are living in a miserable condition so the composed the puranas and mahabharata. Even after compling all these he was not happy till he composed the Srimad Bhagavatham. Bhagavatham is called the maha purana. Gita is part of Mahabaratha (canto 10, Bhisma Parva), the dialoge between the Suprme Lord Krishna and arjuna before the commencement of Kurukhestra war. It is the essence of the vedas. mahabaratha is not a purana but it is a ithiasa just like valmiki ramayana. Mahabaratha is also known as the 5th veda. Your Question What is the difference between the Srimad Bhagavatam and the Bhagavata Purana. If you could kindly provide the answer to this question you are thanked in advance. My answer There is no difference between bhagavat Purana and Srimad Bhagavatham. I do hope it helps. I hope other acaryas from this group can give more enlightenment.
