"Thvayi rakshathi rakshakai kimanyaihi

Thvayitha rakshathi rakshakai kimanyaihi"

"Thvayi pravruthe mama kim prayasaihi

Thvayi apravruthe mama kim prayasaihi"

(Sorry for the spellings)

I vaguely remember the meaning of this. Can someone

tell me more about this. I think this was said by Sri

Desikan.

SrI:

SrImathE Gopaladesika mahadesikaya namah:

Dear Smt Raji Sridhar,

This is the eighth sloka of Swamy Desikan's Kaamaasikaashtakam (on Lord

Nrumsimhan).

Swamy Desikan says:

tvayi rakshati rakshakaih kim ananyaih, tvayi caa arakshati rakshakaih kim

ananyaih.

bhagavAn is the only one who can protect us. If He does not protect us

no one else can protect us, and if He decides to protect us, we don't need

anyone else's protection.

This concept is conveyed in Slokam 8 - The same idea was conveyed in SrI

ashTabhujAshTakam Sloka-s 5 and 6: bhayam kutah syAt tvayi sAnukampe,

rakshA kutah syAt tvayi jAtaroshe (Slokam 5), and tvayi pravr*tte mama kim

prayAsaih, tvayyapravr*tte mama kim prayAsaih (Slokam 6). This is the basis

of goptr*tva varaNam which is one of the

a~nga-s of prapatti (from Sri N Krishnamchari's great series on Desika

sthOthras in archives)

Dear Sri. Raji Sridhar,

Namaskarams. The sloka given by you comes in

KAAMAASIKAASHTAKAM by Sri Nigamantha Mahadesikan.

This slokam describes Sri LakshmiNrusimhan. The

meaning of the sloka is given below:

"Thvayi rakshathi rakshakai kimanyaihi

Thvayitha rakshathi rakshakai kimanyaihi"

"If you protect us there is no need for others

If you dont protect us who else can do it ?"

This sloka is the 8th verse of KAAMAASIKAASHTAKAM

which describes the sitting posture of

SriLakshmiNrusimhan.

Detailed meaning of this and many other Desikan Slokas

is given in a book by Prof.A Srinivasaraghavachariar

titled LIFE AND WORKS OF SRI DESIKAN and the copy is

available at KR Ramaseshan, 47, Krishnamachari Nagar,

Valasaravakkam, Chennai 600 087.

Thanks

kpnarasimhan

RAJI SRIDHAR [sridharaji]

Dear Members,

thvayi rakshathi rakshakai: kimanyai:|

thvayichArakshathi rakshakai: kimanyai:|

ithi nischitha dhE: srayAmi nithyam

nruharE VegavathI tadAsrayam thvAm || Sri kAmAsikAshtakam, slOkam #

8

Swamy Desikan sings the praise of Sri Nrusimhan at Velukkai, on the southern

banks of river Vegavathi. In this slOkam, Swamy very movingly observes,

Oh Nrusimha! When you are out there to protect (us), where is the need for

others (protectors)? And if you decide not to, then of what use is such

protection from others? I am absolutely convinced of this and therefore I

surrender to You, Oh! Lord on the banks of Vegavathi, seeking refuge.

Very similarly, in Sri ashtabhujAshtakam slokam # 6 Swamy reiterates the

concept of prapatti while singing of our Lord at Attabuya karam (kAnchi),

where He is said to have doubled his hands to protect us in double quick

time!! This slokam starts with the famous gajEndra mOksham episode.

.... gajEndra rakshA dvaritham bhavantham....

tvadEka tandram kamalA sahAya

svEnaiva mAm rakshithu marhasi thvam|

thvayi pravrutthE mama kim prayAsai:

thvai apravrutthE mama kim prayAsai ||

With Sri Lakshmi by His side interceding on our behalf, if Lord srIman

NarAyana decides to extend His protection (to us), there is nothing else we

need to do. If He decides otherwise, there is little else we can do.

"Focusing your thought on Me, you shall, by My grace cross over all

difficulties" -Lord Krishna, Sri bhagavad gIta, Ch 18 Verse 58 (taken from

Sri Ramanuja Gita Bhasya)

Respectfully,

Sriram
