SrI:

Dear BhakthAs of SrI RaamachandrA :

Today is a blessed day. Besides being the Thirunakshathram

of Swamy KUrEsar , it is also the AarAdhanam day for one

of the greatest Raama BhakthAs at ThiruvayyARu on

the banks of Cauvery river . Sathguru ThyAgarAja SwamigaL

is that apoorva Raama Bhakthar, who performed NithyArAdhanam

for Janaki SamEtha Raamabhadran , conversed with Him in

the madhura BhAshai of SangItham from dawn to dusk .

At his resting place (brundhaavanam) on the banks of

Cauvery ,SrI Raama Naama SankIrthanam reverberates

all the time. The archA Moorthy of Lord Rmachandra

worshipped by Saint ThyagarAja is today at his relatives'

home at Varahappiyer Lane in the City of ThanjAvoor.

In this posting adiyEn will have a Raama Naama AshtOttharam

(108 dhivya Naamas of Lord Raamabhadran ) culled from

the Naamakusumams enshrined in Saint ThyagarAjA's krithis.

In subsequent postings, adiyEn will focus on some of

the beautiful krithis of the Saint on Lord Raama .

For Saint ThyagarAjar , the whole world was

Raama Mayam. The meanings of the many naamAs

chosen by the Saint are deep and are straight

from Upanishads and Srimadh RaamAyaNam of Adhi Kavi

ValmIki. It is no wonder since Saint is saluted as

the avathAram of Sage VaalmIki.There are some strict

VaishNavAs , who criticize Saint ThyagarAja as not

a true VaishNava because he sang about Gods other than

Sriman NaarAyaNan at one stage of his life . All of this

does not hold water with me . Any one qualified enough by

His or Her "Tapas" and NithyAnushtAnam to have had

the parama bhAgyam of the SaakshArkhAram (direct darsanam )

of Lord Raamachandran with His family members

( SitA pirAtti, LakshmaNa Swamy and HanumAn) not once ,

but twice in his life time is beyond any of these criticisms.

Such critics commit only BhagavathApachAram to one ,

who is so dear to SrI Raamachandra Para Brahmam.

All these aside, let us enjoy the dhivya NaamAs used by

the Saint to salute the Lord of AyOdhyA .

Some 28 years ago , Sriman PurushOtthaman

of Andhra pradhEsh SangItha Naataka Academy

wrote a beautiful monograph on the Krithis of

Saint ThyaagarAjaa .He culled and classified

the dhivya NaamAs used by the Saint in his krithis

into number of categories such as :

1. RaamA as the Lord of the Universe:" CharAchArAthmaka ,

LOkadhAra , SakalAdhAra " et al.

2. Parama Purusha ( Lord Supreme): " ApramEya , DEvadhidEvan,

ParAthparan, SvaprakAsan" et al

3. Lord of the VedAs and Aagamas (Veda Purushan): "Nigama-

sArArthan, Aagama moolan.."

4. Lord as Srushti KarthA ( Jagath KaaraNan ):

" AkhilANDa KOti BrahmANDa Naayakan...."

5. Lord Eternal( Saasvathan):" Aadhimoolan, SanAthanan,

PurANa Purushan..."

6. Lord Ineffable: " VaachamAgOcharan "

7. Protector of the Meek and the Good (Bhaktha Rakshakan):

"Aasritha ParAdhInan, Aapath BhAndhavan ,Bhaktha Sulabhan,

Sritha Jana pOshakan..."

8. The grantor of Moksham: " Bhava Thaarakan , Bhava Roga haraNan,

SaraNyan ..."

9. Sarva Parisuddhan: "AkaLankan , NirdhOshan , Nirmalan...

NirvikAran , Raagarahithan..."

10. Peronification of Fullness: ParipoorNan , ParipoorNa Kaaman..

11. Source of Auspiciousness: " Sreekaran, amitha Subhakaran ..."

12. Embodiment of Mercy: " AvyAja KaruNA saagaran, DhayA Sindhu,

GhruNAkaran, krupaalavAlan , KaruNA Jaladhi..."

13. Source of Bliss: "NithyAnandhan , Charama Phala Prahdan.."

14. Source of Sarva MangaLams:" KshEma-karan , SukhAspadhan ,

Sukha-dAyakan".

15. Remover of all Sins:" Paapa VimOchanan, Paapa thimira VibhAkaran,

AgaharanPaapa HaraNan.."

16. Souce of DharmA:" DharmAthmaa.."

17. Source of Divine Wisdom & Sanctity: "Sujn~aana nidhi,

PuNya SlOkan.."

18. Abode of Festivity:" NithyOthsavan, NithyOthsava Roopan.."

19: Grantor of Boons: "Kaamitha-Paladhan, Varadhan.."

20. Dweller in the heart of learned: "Budha Jana vidhAran,

Budha ManOharan.."

Saint ThyagarAjA's celebration of the Supreme and unmatched beauty

of Sri Raamachandran and describtion of the soundharyam of

His limbs and faculties as well as His dhivya guNams as

the Son of DasaraTan, the prince of AyOdhyA , SeethA's husband

are beautifully described by SrI PurushOtthaman in his

scholarly book.

As for myself , I will select a One Hundred and Eight

NaamAvaLi from the Krithis of Saint ThyagarAjA

and place it at the sacrd feet of Lord Raamachandran

on this specail day . I would leave the mapping of

the selected naamAms to the individual krithis of

the Saint to the readers. I will refer to the RaagAs of

the Krithis next to the Naamams for easy mapping.

As we reflect on the meanings of these beautiful and

auspicious names that Sathguru ThyAgara Swamy chose to

perform AarAdhanam to Lord Raamachandran, one can

not help relate to the nava Vidha Bhakthi displayed

by this special Raama Bhakthar to his Ishta Dhaivam.

adiyEn will conclude this posting with the rest of t

he AshtOttharam in the next posting.

Anantha praNama to all Bhagavathas.

Prostrating at the feet of SrimAn SatagOpan Swami,

adiyEn would like to submit two points.

1. 108 NAMAVALI BASED ON ST. THYAGARAJA’S

COMPOSITIONS:-

The pancharatna kriti ‘jagadAnandakAraka” (raga –

nAttai) is a composition of nAmArchana. This has been

vividly and elaborately elucidated by sri Satagopan

swami in his tamil book on the pancharatna kritis

(compiled through letters to his sister). This seems

to be another anubhava of the swami in the same lines.

2. ST. THYAGARAJA AS A PRAPANNA :-

Vedas do mention worship of devathas, scores of rishis

and munis who have seen directly sriman nArAyanA

(sAkshAtkArA Darsanam) have sung the praise of other

devethas. It is, hence, more appropriate to understand

their view point. They do not worship the other

dEvthAs as paratathva, but as parama bhAgavthas or

AchAryas. Like Lord Shiva is considered as the AchArya

who advised the RamatAraka Mantra. ThyagarAja swami,

for example, in the kriti “Seethamma mAyamma” says

“ParamEsha Vashishta parAsara nArada Sounaka Suka

surapati lambhOdara guha sanakAdhulu” – who are these

– they are-“ BhAgavata agrEsarulu”- then what – hence

they are “parama bhAndhavulu” to us. The pancharatna

kriti “endarO mahAnubhAvulu” (Sri ragam), is also

fully dedicated to Bhagavatas. Then people do question

that he has sung compositions on the dEvathAs overtly

also. We must go little deeper into those

compositions.

For example. let us take the kriti “Sri gaNapatini

SevimparArE” in SourAshtra ragam. Lyrics in the last

stanza says “ anayamu hari charaNa yugamuLanu

hridhayAmbujamuna nunchi, vinayamunanu thyagarAja

vinuthudu vividha gathula thitthaLAngumani vedalina –

sri gaNapatini SevimparArE”. Here he extols GaNapati

as one who has firmly installed SRIHARI in his heart

and one who joyously dances singing His praise. This

BhAgavatha in GaNapati is extolled in this kriti.

Unlike few other composers that eulogise anyone and

everyone as “MoolAdhAra moorthy” or “praNava swroopi”

etc., It is very important to record that Swami

ThyagarAja never eulogises these Devathas as

paradEvatha but worships them as paramabhAgavatha that

guides us through our life to attain the paratathva in

Sri Rama. To worship such BhAgavathas is perfect even

as per AzhwAr as stated in thiruvAimozhi in the verses

“payilum sudroLi moothiyai … payilum thiruvudayAr

evarEnum avar kaNdeer, payilum pirappidaithOrum emai

Alum paramarE”.

Seek the blessings of the all the bhAgavathas, if

there are mistakes in my words, sincerely request to

correct me and enlightenme.
