Dear Srivaishnava perunthagaiyeer,

 

Here is a krishna ruchi from this dhasan of krishna. Comments from learned

bhagavathaas are welcome.

 

"A child asks his mother something saying "thaa thaa"-meaning give this,

give this. Next when the child is given the desired object, then the child

exclaims saying ai, ai - idhu enakku kidaichchadhu - I got it -combining

these two thaa + ai becomes thai thai.

 

In the Smt. Ambujam krishna song first charaNam "thaa thaa ena veNNai

kEtka"- child krishNa asked mother yasOdhaa for butter- once krishna got

butter, then he danced thai thai - with butter in hand- thaa + ai has become

thai, - thaa thaa thai thai - that navaneetha naatyam.

 

Perhaps in "sollu kattu" also that is why thaa has next sollu "thai" -

starting from that akhila kala aadhi guru - sri krishna- from his butter

dance of this thaa thai.

 

Smt. AK in her krithi says

karu vizhi iraNdum suzhanRu arul pozhinthida

naRu malar maalai maarbil ilangida

araithanil oLir pattaadai asainthida kaaLiyan

siraththai midhiththu

 

whether this version of showering the grace on kaaLiyan is earlier given by

aazhvaars? When this question is put, the answer we get is a very firm

"yes".

 

See aazhvaar's verse

kaaLiyan poigai kalangap paainthittu avan

neeL mudi ainthilum ninRu nadam seidhu

meeLa avanukku aruL seidha viththagan

thOL vali veeramE paadippaRa

thoomaNi vaNNanai paadip paRa

--3-9-7 periyaazhvaar thirumozhi

meaning: hey girls- sing the glory of the crystal clear gem coloured lord,

sing the glory of his strong shoulders by which he downed the mighty snake

kaaliyan by entering his pond, then danced on the snake's long five headed

hood, also that wizard who showered his grace on that mighty snake.

 

panchvar thoodhanaal bhaaratham kai seidhu

nanju umizh naagam kidantha narpoigai pukku

anchap paNaththin mEl paainthittu aruL seidha

anchana vaNNanaip paadip para

asOdhai than singaththaip paadip paRa.

--Same padhigam of periyaazhvaar thirumozhi

Meaning: Hey girls- sing the glory of that dark black collerium coloured

lord, sing the glory of that son lion of yasOdhaa,

* who went as ambassador for the 5 paaNdavaas and lent his hand in

shaping the epic mahaabhaaratham,

* who entered the poisonous waters of kaaLiyan pond and climbed the

hoods of that snake, showered his grace on that snake.

 

See the lord even though puts his foot down on such dhushtaas- wicked

people- it is his kaaruNyam - grace- which finally takes over- pagaivanukkum

aruL seivaan.

 

A discussion is going on in the list on the colour of hari - krishna- see

here two verses from same aazhvaar in same padhigam - same group of 10

verses- first it is thoomaNi vaNNan- crystal clear colour of a gem, next

anchana vaNNam- anchanam is kaajal- collerium - dark black. So oh, bhakthaas

- you can decide which colour is hari- a colour which is in your mind- that

is his colour.

 

We saw in the earlier post, few types of dances played by krishna in one

krithi by AK. As thirumangai aazhvaar stated sri krishNa is "pal nadam

payinRavan". See here another type of dance krishna performed [which did not

figure in the write up so far]

KudangaL eduththu Era vittu kooththu aadavalla em kOvE

- 2-7-6 periyaazhvaar.

 

AaNdaal also uses identical words but only difference is in singular plural

for that kudam - pot. See she simply follows daddy. Her line is

kudaththai eduththu Era vittu kooththu aada valla em kOvE

- 3-6 naachchiyaar thirumozhi.

 

[Perhaps this is similar to the present day karagam dance, which is popular

in southern parts of tamil nadu - having a decorated pot or vessel on the

head and then dancing without creating any jerk to the pot].

 

All these dances are simply covered in one paasuram of another aazhvaar -

kunRinaal kudai kaviththadhum kOlak

kuravai kOththadhum kudam aattum

kanRinaal viLaveRinthadhum kaalaal

kaaLiyan thalai midhiththadhum mudhalaa

venRi sEr piLLai nal viLaiyaattam ---

- 9-9- kulasekara aazhvaar in perumaaL thirumozhi

 

meaning: all these plays of

1. Using a peak as an umbrella for rain

2. Raasa dance with the girls - kuravai in tamil

3. Kudam dance - pot dance

4. Throwing a calf on tree

5. Putting the foot on kaaliyan snake

-- these child plays, oh krishna, please grant me again as visuals for me if

you can - asks mother dhEvaki to her son krishna since I did not enjoy but

all enjoyed by the other mother yasodhaa.

 

Point: See in this verse even gOvardhanam lifting, throwing the calf on the

viLaa tree all have become dances or plays for mother dhEvaki- for she is

depressed mood - of not able to enjoy krishna's leelas- so pretty dances

with all subtleties have become nal viLaiyaattam - good plays.

 

Another subtle point is very well brought out here. Art also to be enjoyed

in good mood - then only full glory of arts and literature can be enjoyed to

full goodness.

 

All these about the dance. But we did not see a good deal on who provided

the music for the krishna's dance. Only a small reference from periyaazhvaar

saying

theeya paNaththil silambu aarkkap paainthu aadi

vEyin kuzhal oodhi viththaganaai ninRa -- 2-1-3 periyaazhvaar thirumozhi

 

Before seeing who provided the music in detail and who all were the

audiences, let us have few slokams of "naaga pathni sthuthi of krishNa".

Rest of the slokams, their meanings and comments we will have in subsequent

posts.

nama: praaNa moolaaya kavayE saasthrayOnayE!

pravruththaaya nivruththaaya nigamaaya namO nama:!!

44th slokam 16th canto 10th skandham poorvaardham srimadh bhaagavatham

 

Usually I conclude each post sing this particular gunam of gOvindhan till we

receive next post. But I am unable to pin point which gunam to sing- so sing

the whole glory of that "kurai onRum illaadha gOvindhaa" to save the soul-

till we receive the next post.
