Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha!

When Vedavyasa was drowned in sorrow , Na:rada

removed his sorrow by instructing him Bhagavatha

which was given to Na:rada by his father Brahma

in four slokas. Vedavyasa got peace of mind and

happiness after finishing Srimad Bhagavatham.

We see Na:rada many a time in our puranas. He

brings in a conflict between jnana(knowledge)

and ajnana (ignorance); dharma and adharma and

sees that jnana and dharma come out victorious.

He is a ‘Na:rayana Para:yana’. He realized that

Lord Na:ra:yana is all pervading and everything

is depending on Him. He keeps chanting Narayana

nama. Such Na:rada came to Va:lmi:ki who prayed

to Na:rada to clear his doubt.

 

A disciple should have one basic qualification

and the acharya should have three qualities.

An acharya should be:

 

(a) a Thapasswadhyaniratha

(b) a vagvidamvara and

© a munipungava.

 

The sishya should be a ‘thapasvi’ He should

have a craving to know what he could not know.

He should be submissive. Shouldn’t have the

ego that he knew everything already. Va:lmi:ki

and Na:rada are great examples for a disciple

and an acharya respectively. A ‘jnani’ should

possess three qualities– the Upanishad says.

 

“Pa:ndithyam nirvidya ba:lyena thishtta:se:th,

adhamunihi”

 

Pa:ndithyam, ba:lyam and mounam are the three

qualities of a jnani. A realized ‘jnani’ would

not show off his greatness but always be immersed

in experiencing the Lord. One who would desist

from uttering anything other than the ‘bhagavad

vishaya' is said to be observing ‘maunam’(quiet).

Such a person is called a sage (muni ), a

thinker. He can only be an able preacher..

 

We notice the word ‘paripraprachcha’ in the sloka.

It means 'questioned'. He could have used ‘prapracha’.

But when we question seeking divine knowledge we

have to use the word ‘paripraprachcha’. Gita says a

disciple who goes to acharya should do ‘paripraprachcha’.

As Va:lmi:ki did ‘paripraprachcha’ here, we understand

that his enquiry was not about an ordinary man but

about the Divinity that is in form of a man.

Na:rada gave the whole story of SriRamayana in

a hundred slokas briefly.
