Dear Bhagavatas,

I remember reading years ago of a narrative account of the life history of

Ramanuja.

Therein it was described that Ramanuja, upon entering Yamunacharya's ashram

his teacher was leaving the world. Three fingers were raised on the

preceptor's hand and Ramanuja stated the heart's desire of his guru. One by

one the fingers lowered and he was accepted as the natural successor of

Yamunacharya and set out later to fulfill these wishes.

Kindly respond if the above account is accurate? What sources are there for

the history of Ramanuja's life and of this event?

Thankyou again.

Ys,

Jagadish

SrI Ramanujacharya was staying at Kanchi for a while to assist Tiruk Kachi

Nambi in his daily chores of service to Lord Varadaraja.

(3) News came that Alavandar was very sick and he desired to meet with Ilaya

Perumal. Just as Tirukkachi Nambi and Alavandar arrived, they saw the

funeral procession of Alavandar. During the last rites, they noticed that

three fingers of Alavandar remained folded signifying three of his last

unfulfilled wishes.

As Ilaya Perumal swore:

i ) that he would write a commentary on Veda Vyasa's Brahma Sutra

ii ) that he would perpetuate the memory of Sage Vyasa and Sage Parasara

iii ) that he would strive to propagate Visishtadvaita on the lines of the

4000 holy collects of Alwars,

The fingers unfolded one by one automatically and stretched out to normal

position signifying that these were his (Alavandhar's) last wishes. (from

SrI Anbil Ramaswamy's Acharya vamsa vruksham,w hich again refers to many

works listed therein)

Dear Swamy

Adiyen wish to differ with respect to your word that IlayAlwar was

accompanied by Thirukachi Nambi to see Alavandar ,

It was PeriaNambi who took Ilaya Alwar to SriRangam .

The story as you might know already that, when Alavandar was in sarama

disay, he wanted to meet Ilaya Alwar and hence he asked PeriaNambi to go to

Kanchi to bring Ilaya Alwar ,

Peria Nambi just recited the thanian of Alavandar , which made the total

transformation in Ilayalwar and Swamy was more interested in meeting

Alavandar, then both of them went back to SriRangam, when they reach

Karambanoor, they saw Alavandar's final rites going on, after that as you

mentioned Alavandar's folded fingers story, finally Ilaya Alwar returned

back to Kanchi without having Dharsan of Namperumal, for the simple reason

that he could not get his Acharyan's dharsan.

Sorry for elaborating the details and I never mean to hurt you and just want

to mention what I heard thru Upanyasam..

Best Regards

Guna
