Guest guest
SrI: SrImathE rAmAnujAyan namah: Dearest Srivaishnavas, Let us continue to enjoy the ThiruppallANdu. 6. endhai thandhai thandhai thandhai tham mootthappan yEzhpadikaal thodangi, vandhu vazhi vazhi aatsaiginROm, thiruvONatthiruvizhavil, andhiyam pOdhil ariyuruvaagi, ariyai azhiththavanai, pandhanai theerap pallaaNdu, pallaayiratthaaNdenRu paaduthamE. I, my father, his father and his grandfather, et al for several (seven) generations have been performing kaimkaryams (all services) continuously as ParamaikAnthins, to the Lord Sriman Narayanan, who burst out of the pillar in the twilight in the Man Lion (Nrusimha) form and tore and destroyed the enemy of His devotee, Prahalada (HiraNyakasipu). To Such Greatest Lord on this day of ThiruvONam (SravaNam) Nakshathram, let us sing palLANdu to Him in order to destroy our attachment (bondage- bandhan) to this material world. Here AzhwAr addresses those (in 3rd Pasuram- vazhaatppattu) Bhagawathas who are ready to serve Him. (as inferred from "pAduthumE") After the mumukshus (vAzhAtpattu) have come and joined, the seven generations that we have been serving the Lord, can join with other ParamaikAnthins too, who need not have that pAramparya kramam (lineage of seven generations) and sing pallANdu. Also Sri Periyavaachaan Pillai has enjoyed the word Bandhanai “as child vAttam or disease” meaning that the Lord who was just born out of the pillar became exhausted (tired- vAttam- after doing such a Herculean task of destroying HiraNyakasipu) and let us sing pallANdu for removing that vaattam. Though the avatar of the Lord and the avathara rahasyam will contradict with this, it is to be enjoyed as rasa anubhavam and the feelings of a devotee. About this pAsuram- much has been discussed with the subject "varuttham of Narasimha" so enjoyably. Please read from that thread. Why ThiruvONam nakshathram when lord Narasimha was born in swaathi? ThiruvONam is VishNu nakshathram- Lord Venkatesa’s star- Sri Oppiliappan’s star. Also AzhwAr enjoys the pAsurams for ThiruvONA thiruvizhavil. The festival of ThiruvONam. Paancharaathra also refers ThiruvONam as Nrusimha nakshathram. [Thus, AzhwAr has asked the ParamaikAnthis (who were invited in 3rd pAsuram) to sing pallANdu. Now in the next PAsuram, he has asked kaivalya kAmar and aishwarya kAmars to undergo pancha samskaram- become Srivaishnavas- join the group and sing pallANdu.] 7. theeyiRpolikinRa sensudaraazhi, thikazh thirucchakkaraththin, kOyil poRiyaalE oRRuNdu ninRu, kudikudi aatseyginROm, maayap porupadai vaaNanai, aayirandhOLum pozhi kuruthi paaya suzhaRRiya aazhi vallaanukkup, paLLaaNdu kooRuthumE. We and all our family members need to serve Thee and hence, we have undergone SamasrayaNam (Pancha samskAram (refer to Sri Anand Karalapakkam’s article on samasrayanam: in archives or in www.srivaishnava.org or www.ahobilamutt.org ) in which we have been given ChakrA (that has been placed on fire and is red luminous in color) on our shoulder to mark ourselves as Srivaishnavas to serve You. [While singing about the mark on shoulders, AzhwAr remembers the shoulders that got cut by Him- When thousand shouldered baaNAsuran (for obstructing the marriage of Usha and Aniruddhan- KrishNA's grandson) fought with KrishNA, with the support of even Rudran, SubramaNian and Vinayaka, they were all conquered effortlessly by KrishNA and were chased away..AzhwAr here infers that if one does not undergo this ChakrA marking on his or her shoulders, he is like that bAaNAsuran ] Let us sing pallAdnu to Him who cut asunder the 1000 shoulders of BaaNAsuran with his resplendent shining Divine ChakrA - the river of blood flowing from the cut shoulders! (so ChakrA on the shoulders for marking Srivashnava and the eternal servitude to Him on one side; ChakrA for the 1000 shoulders for the enemy too for punishment) AzhwAr here “aazhi vallAnukku” the One who can effortlessly send this divine Great chakra and utlize the same. 8: neyyidai nallathOr sORum, niyathamum aththaaNich sEvakamum, kaiyadaik kaayum kazhutthukkuppooNodu kaadukkuk kuNdalamum meyyida nallathOr saandhamum thandhu, ennai veLLuyiraakka valla, paiyyudai naagap pagai kodiyaanukku, paLLaaNdu kooRuvanE. AzhwAr sings pallAndu (in front of the group that has joined) to PerumAL for His merciful anugraham (blessing). The word kooRvanE (in singular thus refer to AzhwAr alone singing pallANdu. neyyidai n^allathOr sORum- the food in the middle of Ghee (neykku naduvil sORu:- ), that too good food, meaning- Prepared with no theetu, and with Sathvika ingredients, and also offered to the Lord.. niyathamum- the kaimkaryam that is performed daily; (all times) atthAni sEvakamum- the special kaimkaryam performed in AsthAna maNdapam; (while doing so, ) the betel nut, the leaves (veRRilai-pAkku) {that is given to the Bhaagawatha when doing kaimkaryam at AsthAna maNdapam}; sandal paste are all offered as Bhagavath prasAdham to aDiyEn, along with the Lord’s garland (kazhutthukku pooNOdu ) and the ear studs (kUndalam) thus maimg me into full fledged saathvIka; - To such Lord (the 0ne who could transform even me: -) who has GarudA as His flag- I will sing pallANdu. Thus, I will sing pallaaNdu to the One who changed me (who was a samsaari) into a saathveeka by giving the opportunity to perform aththaani sevakam, in addition to giving me ornaments, thamboolam etc. [As mentioned earlier, few elders have referred this PAsuram to be sung for those who are addressed in the fifth paasuram (aNdak kulathukku)- aishwarya kAmar (primary concern is wealth)- ]. How? neyyidai sOru- veRRilai are all aishwarya kAmars and the the question may arise as to why atthANi sEvakam (service at AsthAna maNdapam then?) – meaning: those devotes also have now opted for service and got changed: -) Then why kooRuvanE- singular tem? Answer: AzhWar selects one out of those devotees and addresses him as "kooRuvanE" [AzhwAr was blessed with such items and now he mentions the ones given to everyone there by the Lord.. in the next PAsuram] 9: uduththukkaLaindha ninpeethaka vaadai uduththuk, kalaththadhuNdu, thoduththa thuzhaaymalar soodikkaLaindhana, soodum-iththoNdargaLOm, viduththa thisaikkarumam thirutthith, thiruvONatthiruvizhavil, paduththa painnaagaNai ppaLLi koNdaanukkup, paLLaaNdu kooRuthumE. When the Lord goes on a procession (uthsavam), we go along with Him, performing kaimkaryam and enjoying his divine beauty, and then when he gets back, what He removes (the dresses, ornaments), we receive with respect, and reverence, and then sing pallANdu when he goes for Yoga nithrA.. Oh Lord! We – (who wear the silk cloth that You disrobe after Your grand Uthsavam; who eat what remains in the vessel after eaten by You; who wear the thuLasi garlands that are removed from Your ThirumEni – Body) thus- who have been performing kaimkaryam for long time, and those mumukshus, who have just joined us- perform the kaimkaryam at various directions as directed by You during this ThiurvONam uthsavam – and then when You lie down on the nicely made Bed of Adhi sEshan, we sing pallAdnu to You. [in next PAsuram, AzhwAr says- we have peformed saraNagathy and hence, we serve You only for Your and our enjoyment. That is swayam prayOjana kaimkarya rUpam] That we will see in next post:- ) after Sri Ramanavami...
