Dear Sriman Shruti,

As per Sriman Ramanuja, the "jivana mukti" concept is untenable. The Jivatma as

long as embodied in the mortal coil (prAkruta sharIra) will not able to attain a

fully liberated state. This is true irrespective of the level of knowledge &

devotion an individual may possess.

As per Sriman Ramanuja, the jIvAtma will be bound by prakruti/karmA as long as

it is associated with the mortail coil.

Kindly address this question.

I believe I have read in a number of places that according to Sri Ramanuja's

doctrine jivana-mukti (embodied or "living" liberation) is an untenable

doctrine, that only videha-mukti is plausible.

Is this the accepted conclusion?

I thank you in advance,

Jagadish Dasa

Ramanuja rejects the concept of embodied liberation as a contradiction in

terms, since liberation in the full sense means the end of all karman, and

thereby of all contact with gross and subtle physical bodies. The

attainment of actual omniscience, etc, does not take place while the body

remains. However, if by 'liberation' only self-realization is meant, then

Ramanuja does not deny its possibility in the embodied state, and

occasionally he does employ the word in this sense himself, as in

Gitabhashya 6.3: yavad atmavalokanarupamokshapraptis tavat karma karyam

'until one attains liberation in the form of self-realization, he should

perform action'.

SRIMATHE RAMANUJAYA NAMAH:

Dear Sri Jagdhish Dasa,

Your question-

Sri Ramanuja does not indicate Jeevan Mukhthi.

Because it 'has not been' indicated in the TEXTS.(Epistemologically,

ramanuja accepts PRATHYAKSHA(perception), ANUMANA (INFERENCE) and

SABDA (verbal testimony of the Texts) as valid means of knowledge.

Ref (my previous post - Taiittriya)

Chapter 3 -10.5:- the knower "AFTER LEAVING this world only" proceeds

through other levels and attains the Ultimate.

The one who wanted to challenge this rule was Sage Vishwamithra when

he wanted to send Thrishangu to Swarga with Deham, but

unsuccessfully.

If such is case with attaining swarga loga, we can imagine what it is

for Mukhthi/ moksha.

The reason for the incapability is perhaps to do with the finiteness

of the body (deham) and the physical body acting as a "chirai"

(confinement) for the non-confinable Jiva/Brahma.
