Guest guest
Sri Parthasarathi thunai Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha Dear Smt.Jayashree, Though this question will be well answered by other learned members of the group let me try to answer your question up to my little knowledge. When you take a doctor or a lawyer though they wear a black or white coat for identification they need to be educated correspondingly and should possess the required knowledge. Though they go to a college to get the book knowledge and elligibility to practice they have to work under a senior for a year or two before they actually practice on their own. Like wise a Srivaishnava has two identifications. Agachinnam(inside qualities) and purachinnam(outside). No one is a Srivaishnava by birth. we are born as brahmins, kshetriyas, vaishyas or sudras but anyone can become a Srivaishnava. Irrespective of caste creed or gender anyone can become a srivaishnava. THis is what sri ramanuja preached and wanted to establish all through his lifetime. So the admission to the course is entering a college. Similarly a Srivaishnava enters the college under a acharya and his identity card is the panchasamskaram which a acharya does. Now no student on entering the college becomes a engineer or doctor but he has to learn the subjects and get qualified , pass the exam. So now the student(Srivaishnava) learns our sampradayam vishayam from his acharya and there are also so many disciplines that a srivaishnava should follow. The prinicipal is none other than Emperuman. He tests the srivaishnava both disciplinary wise and academically and if the student clears then the emperuman grants him moksha. If the student is good but struggles to attain knowledge the acharya and the principal takes extra care and makes him to clear the exam. So this is what we call in our sampradayam acharya kataksham and bhagavat sankalpam. Like the uniform in a school or college to give an identity that the student belongs to that particular institution similarly a srivaishnava should wear the oordva pundram. A lawyer never hesitates to wear a black coat nor does a doctor to wear a white one, but wears it with pride, but why should a srivaishnava hesitate to wear his Thiruman on his forehead? People appreciate modern punks but they talk ill of the person who has shikai which is our tradition. We srivaishnavas should realise the importance of all these. Now let me substantiate my note with one of the words of our beloved acharya Sri Pillailokacharya in his 'Mumukshupadi' sutra 116 "purampundAna pattrugalaiadaiya vAsanaiyOde vidugaiyum, emperumAnaiye tanjamendru pattrugaiyum, pErutappAduendru tunindirukkaiyum, pettrukku dvarikkaiyum, errukkum nAl ugantirunda nilangalile pravananAi gunAnubhava kainkaryangalile pozhudupOkkaiyum, eppadi errukum srivaishnavargal ettrum arindhu vugandhuerrukkaiyum, Thirumandiraththilum dwayaththilum niyadhanAgaiyum, Acharya premam ganathtirukkaiyum, Acharyan pakkalilum emperuman pakkalilum kruthagyanAi pOrugaiyum, jnanamum, vairAkhtiyum, shantiyum, oodaiyavanAi errukkum paramasAtvikanOdE sahavAsam pannugaiyum vaishnavAdikArikku avashyAbheshitam” In this sutra Sri Lokacharya clearly explains what all qualities a Srivaishnava should have. 1. He/she should leave all other wishes along with vasana because if not, at one time he will come for bhagavat bhakthi and kainkaryam then the worldly pleasures will again pull him. 2. He/she has to accept emperuman as his soul refuge. He should not consider anyone else (other devatas or other manushyas) or even himself to be his refuge. He has to realise that only the emperuman can save him and he alone is responsible for everything. 3. Be confident that due to acharya and bhagavat krupai we will surely attain moksha. Alwar says “vaikundam puguvadu mannavar vidhiye” and “maranamAnal vaikundam tarum perumal” A srivaishnava should have a great confidence in these words. 4. He/she should realise that all the worldly things are temporary and that only bhagavat kainkaryam is sasvatam(permanent) so we should have a urge in our minds to attain the thiruvadi of bhagavan as soon as possible getting away from this samsaric world. 5. For the days we stay in this leela vibhuti we should stay in divyadesams, which were the places adorned by our alwars and acharyas and spend our time listening to the divine bhagavat vishaya kalashepams and doing various kainkaryams to emperuman. 6. The most important thing a Srivaishnava should do is respect the Srivaishnava who has all the above qualities. He/she should stay in the satsangam of such Srivaishnavas. 7. He/she should know the importance of Thirumantram and dwayam and should recite it along with the thinking of the meaning always 8. He/she should have a strong devotion towards his acharya. 9. He/she should be grateful towards perumal and his acharya who has imparted the divine knowledge to him and thereby washing his sins have made him a clear soul. 10. He/she should always stay in the company of a Srivaishnava who is filled with jnanam(knowledge), vairAkhyam(detachment to anything other than bhagavan and bhagavat vishayam) and shanthi(peace). Sri Pillailokacharya says these are the qualities a Srivaishnava should essentially possess. Hope this helps. All the errors are due to my lack of knowledge and ignorance. I beg the pardon the learned members for the same. Adiyen Ramanuja Dasyai Sumithra Varadarajan jasn sn <jayasartn wrote: SRIMATHE RAMANUJAYA NAMAHA Who is a Sri vaishnavan? Guest guest
SrI: SrImathE rAmAnujAya namah: Dearest srivaishnavas, adiYen tries to attempt responding to the queries to my little knowledge. Who is a Sri vaishnavan? (Hope I am not inviting the wrath of the rs of this list in asking this question.) A Srivaishnava is one who undergoes Pancha samskara from a Srivaishnava Acharya. Is it by birth- No. It is not by birth. Any one can become one by performing Pancha samskaram (Samasrayanam). Please read Sri Anand Karalapakkam's article in the archives. Excellent article. If one is devotee of Sriman Narayanan, he wears OOrdhva puNdram (the sacred mark that should be worn vertical upwards- not downwards nor horizontal. indicating that there will be an upliftment:-) Women can and should undergo Pancha samskaram and become Srivaishnavas too. They can wear Oordhva puNdram (as applicable), perform rahasyathraya japa daily; assist and help spouse / male member who performs ThiruvArAdhanam like collecting flowers, washing PerumAL pAthram, etc.. and recite slokas; teach slokas to children.. There are also Athma guNAs that a Srivaishnava needs to cultivate. Please read Vaishnava janatO song translation by Narsi mehta. He is a Vaishnava who feels for the suffering of another And forgets the good he does to another, never taking pride in it. Who cares not for the praise and condemnation of the world nor himself indulges in it. He is not attached to women and wealth; such a one is praiseworthy and a jewel to his family. He is the same to all, is desireless and the women of others he considers like unto his mother. He never speaks falsehood nor has he his eye on another one's wealth. He is no slave of any passion or attachment, and the spirit of renunciation rules his mind. His heart is fixed on the Lord, whom he is restless to meet, really his body is indeed a pilgrim's garb. He is neither avaricious, nor vile nor a victim to wrath and desire. Says Narsi, verily he and his family shall cross the cycle of rebirth. I would also like to reproduce what I hear from Sri Velukkudi Swamy's upanyasam on KooratthAzhwAn: Sri Velukkudi Swamy took a nice Gita slokam to explain the AthmaguNAs of Sri KooratthAzhwAn. I would like to mention that here so that we can attempt to ape and inculcate a fraction of these gunAs. amaanithvam, adhambithvam, ahimsaa, kshaanthi:, aarjavam/ aachaarya upaasanam, saucham, sthairyam, aathmavinigraha:// (GitA- Ch 13- 8) Very simple slOka: (since Velukkudi Swamy explained it so beautifully, I would like to share) I am not going to explain how it refers to Sri KooratthAzhwAn (it should be heard from Swamy’s cassette- then only one can enjoy). Let me just say what it means: 1. amaanithvam: Vidya garvam, dhana garvam, kula garvam, etc.. is the feeling of pride for one’s intelligence or knowledge (education), or wealth, or kulam (that he is from great thatthachariar family, Bharadwaja gOthram etc..), and that one is good looking, is all called “maanam” One who has it is maanee. Amaanee is the one who does not have these prides. Means: the moment one has this pride, other Bhagawathas will be looked down, by him, means- he commits BhAgawatha apacharam. 2. adhamibithvam- no dhmbam- no blowing of one’s own trumpet: If one does some good deed, dharmam, like contributing to some Divya Desam or for CD ROM of Ramanuja, he shall not blow his trumpet.. It is His money, He takes it for His temple.. We are only instrumental, as a messenger. 3. ahimsaa: not only in action, also by speech, and thought, we need to avoid hurting other “beings”; not just human beings,- all beings... 4. kshaanthi: patience- At any point of time, one should avoid anger. We can cultivate anger- i.e. pretending anger.. but not getting angry.. (Here, I am not able to resist referring to KooratthAzhwAn’s asking the Lord for the same good for Nalooran (who was responsible for even the loss of AzhwAn’s eyesight) too, as his.. 5. aarjavam- manas, vaak, body (kaayam)- all shall be same working in tandem.. What the mind thinks, the mouth shall speak.. (not vaay vaazhaipazham, kai karuNaikkizhangu.). what one speaks, the body shall act.. uLLonru vaitthu puRamonRu pEsaadhirutthal.. Otherwise, it will be kapatam.. That is the lakshaNam of dhuraathmA; not mahAthmA. 6. Aachaarya upaasanam- praising one’s AchAryan at all times- thinking of Him at all times- having a thought that whatever jnAnam that one possesses, (sathvishayam) is all due to being His Thiruvadi. We need to prostrate Him, very many times, ask, enquire respectfully, and get our “doubts” clarified. We need to perfrom kaimkaryam to Him (of not physically, at least monetarily..- by allocating some funds from the earning..). We need to celebrate His Thirunakshathram, in a grand manner at our home, with family and children, recite His thaniyan, and saying … SrimathE “…………” Namah: as many times as possible on that day at least (108, 1008 times..) 7. Saucham- parisuddhi.. one shall be pure.. means: one has to perform necessarily the nithya karmas like sandhyavandhanam. We need to be pure, physically and mentally.. dhVesham (feeling jealous), telling lies.. is all asuddham (dirt to our mind..) what is said as anAchAram, to be avoided in Ahara niyamam, one needs to avoid as much as we can.. Avoid “as much as possible”, para annam (hotels- eating outside) not that we disrespect, but that it may contaminate our already contaminated minds.. 8. sthairyam: being steady.. Firmness- That is essential. This can be achieved only when we have no confusion or be influence by non-vedic thoughts /arguments. (Sri Velukkudi Swamy said “just by a simple reading of the meaning /commentary of Sri Alavandhar’s SthOthra Rathnam, one can get all their doubts clarified.. Very true.. There are commentaries of Swamy desikan, Periya vaachanpiLLai. On this great hymn.. Really marvellous.. all our queries on tatvatrayam, Vishitadvaitham, anya dEvathA will all vanish..) the best option is: Just stay at and as AchArya Thiruvadi.. means: What our AchAryan says is TRUTH.. Close your ears for other things.. Where He goes.. is where the Thiruvadi will go.. It can not go separately.. 9. aathmavinigarah: - means: Other than the knowledge of actual swaroopam of jIvAthmA (which is being dhaasabhootham / sEshan / servant of Emperumaan Sriya: Pathi Sriman Narayanan), any other jnAnam / longing for any other shall be KILLED (or in other words, CURTAILED..) Please forgive adiyEn, if it sounds preaching. That is not the intent. I was so inspired by this slOkam when Sri Velukkudi Swamy referred to, I wished to share and would like to remind ourselves for inculcating the above nine qualities and start (if not already done) Regards Namo Narayana Acharyan Thiruvadi _______________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx
Guest guest
There is an interesting definition in "SrI-vaishNava dinacaryA" published by viSishTAdvaita-pracAriNI sabhA, Chennai. "panca-kaala-paaraayaNa-s who uninteruptedly perform nitya/naimittika vaidika karmas day-in & day-out from dawn to dusk, are glorified as SrI-vaishNava-s" (of course, performed with sAtvika-tyAga) I personally believe other qualities like being nice etc, automatically happen as a result of uninterupted performance of panca- kaala-para-kriya as laid out by SrI rAmAnujAcArya in his nitya- grantham. That said, I dare say there is very few SrI-vaishNava-s living on planet Earth currently. aDiyEn, rAmAnuja-dAsan //Ramkumar
