Dear Sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

"gOvindhan guNam paadinaal urugaatha manam enna manamO?" asks OVS swamy in

his krithi in the raaga thOdi starting with pallavi "urugaatha manam enna

manamO?" - "hey, what sort of that mind or heart, it is, which does not

melt, when it sings my gOvindhan's name and fame".

To help the hearts to melt in singing that kaaLinga narthana krishna's

prabhaavam let us see the next verse of same OVS mahan.

kaaLinga rathna gaNa phaNa sanga paadha, kamalaayadhaaksha, prEma

aalinga gOpa yuvadhee janaanga kucha kunkumaangitha sareera,

kaalaambu thaapa, kanakaaBha, thunka vakshasthalEna dharaLa neela

brundhaadhi haarahE, dhEnusvaasa pura nilaya, jayasE, namasthE|

meaning: oh lord who resides in dhEnusvaasa puram- alias ooththukkadu -

victory to you, prostration to you, my lord who is

* having the shine of the feet which just mingles well with the gems

held by the snake kaalinga in his 100 heads

* having lotus like eyes

* having the chest smeared with the stains of that kumkumam which

became wet and came down from face and covered the breasts of the gOpees,

when he embraced them in love with them

* having black cloud colour body

* having the shine of that kanakaa lakshmi in the raised chest

* having the cool dark tulasi garlands

Points: 1. kaaLinga rathna gaNa phaNa sanga paadha: - this has to be read as

kaaLinga phaNa rathna gaNa sanga paadha: - The lord's feet is also red -

lotus feet - so the colour - the gems held by kaliyan the snake are also

red- naaga rathnam. Kaaliyan is about to spit these gems, for he is unable

to bear the strain of the lord's feet pressing him down - to make the snake

realise the glory of his feet - in the open mouth these gems shine. When the

snake struggles for its life, then only it spits the gem held. So these gems

are about to come out - these gems shine, above the head of the snake, the

lotus feet also shine. Further the snakes protruding eyes also are red in

anger and they also add to shine - all red colours. On both sides of this

red shine it is black, snake's body is also dark, lord's body is also cloud

colour - see the contrast - rathna gana sanga paadha: - visualise this

scene in your mental plane - then if your heart is not melting - urugaatha

manam enna manamO?

2. kamalaayadhaaksha:- raamaanuja's episode with his guru strikes the mind -

"puNdareekam eva". It simply allures. "neeNda apperiyavaaya kaNgaL ennai

pEdhamai seidhna" says thirup paaN aazhvaar - so those lotus red eyes always

lures and entice bhakthaas - such wonderful eyes.

3. kongaimEl kumkumaththin kuzhambu azhiyap pugunthu oru naaL thangumEl en

aavi thangum- says aaNdaaL in her 8-7 thirumozhi- one day he must stay with

me in such a way that my thilakam in the forehead comes down in sweat to my

breasts and that stains he takes in his chest. Such a kind of embrace I

want. OVS lines are "prEma aalinga gOpa yuvadhee janaanga kucha

kunkumaangitha sareera" -did OVS took these lines of aaNdaal as reference

while he coined his lines in this poem? Oh, Bhakthaas you can judge.

4. kanakaaBha:- kanakam is gold, kanakaa is lakshmi. Aabha is shining. So he

is kanakaaBha. "thiruk kalanthu sErumaarbha" says thirumazhisaip piraan in

verse 103 - she simply shines in the chest of the lord. So he is kanakaaBha:

5. "or poigaivaai vidam kalantha paambin mEl nadam payinRa naathanE, thaN

thuzhaai vadam kalantha maalai maarbhaa" - verse 38 of thiruch chantha

viruththam- kaalinga narthanam and tulasi maalai maarbu - combination - it

appears to me OVS took clue from this verse to frame his verse. Oh bhakthaas

you can pass judgement.

Just enjoy that govindhan and do that manam uruguthal before we take the

next verse.

Dhasan
