Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

 

In this post we will see naamaas in sree vishNu sahasra naamam having the common

thread of luminous subjects [or objects?] we see around ourselves like "sun,

moon, stars" etc.

 

a. The SUN

1. Om aadhithyaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 39 occurring in slOkam 5

meaning: the very person or truth or purusha in the sun is aadhithya.

 

Also naamaa no. 568 occurring in slOkam 60

Meaning: son of adhithi and kaasyaba - [adhithi is dhEvaki in krishna

avathaaram]

Who is to be realised by means of 'aa' the beeja manthra .

 

2. Om BhaanavE nama: -- naamaa no.126 occurring in slOkam 14

meaning: the sun who shines.

Sri sankara considers this naama with previous sarva vith and gives a meaning -

one who is all knowing and effulgent.

 

Also naamaa no. 285 occurring in slOkam 31

Meaning: the lustrous sun who shines himself - self effulgent - the sun

presiding over the solar system.

 

3. Om Bhaaskara dhyuthayE nama: -- naamaa no.283 occurring in slOkam 30

meaning: the effulgence of the sun - he who has the brilliance of the sun.

This naamaa is Bhaaskaraaya nama: for sri sankara - meaning - the sun.

 

4. Om bruhadh BhaanavE nama: -- naamaa no. 335 occurring in slOkam 36

meaning: one who illumines the world with rays of sun and moon

- of profuse lustrous rays that spread every where.

 

5. Om sahasra amsave nama: -- naamaa no. 484 occurring in slokam 51

meaning: - the 1000 rayed sun- sun in samskrith is sahasra amsuh.

- he is endowed with immeasurable knowledge in all spheres

 

6. Om jyOthi: aadhithyaaya nama: -- naamaa no.569 occurring in slOkam 60

meaning: the supreme lord who is the resplendence in the sun.

 

7. Om thEjO vrushaaya nama: -- naamaa no.763 occurring in slOkam 81

Meaning: one who showers splendour, radiance. As the sun showers heat and

light.

 

8. Om arkaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 801 occurring in slOkam 85

meaning: one who is in the form of sun - naaraayaNa is the sun [ this meaning

is from sri sankara]. Sri bhattar considers this naamaa as representing the

bhudhdha avathaaram.

 

9. Om sahasra archishE nama: -- naamaa no. 830 occurring in slokam 89

meaning: who has provided thousands of beneficent rays to sun,

he who has in his effulgence thousands of rays.

 

10. Om saptha vaahanaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 833 occurring in slokam 89

meaning: one who has seven vehicles as carriers, the sun has a chariot [or

carrier] drawn by seven horses, which are seven days of a week.

 

11. Om ravayE nama: -- naamaa no. 884 occurring in slOkam 94

meaning: as sun sri hari dries up every thing in universe

one who absorbs vapour the rasa from every thing.

The uththaraayaNa puNya kaalam - the 4th step in the archiraadhi maargam.

 

12. Om virOchanaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 885 occurring in slOkam 94

meaning: one who shines in different forms - he is the sun moon and other

resplendent spheres in the cosmos.

The particular year- when sun shines both in uththaraayaNa and dhakshiNaayanam

- 5th step in the archiraadhi maargam.

 

13. Om sooryaaya nama: -- naamaa no.886 occurring in slOkam 94

meaning: the sun in the solar system - one source from where all things have

been born - the source of movement in the form of wind - the 6th step in the

archiraadhi maargam.

 

14. Om savithrE nama: -- naamaa no. 887 occurring in slOkam 94

meaning: as sun he who produces rain and crops

one who brings forth from himself the universe of things and beings.

The 7th step in the archiraadhi maargam.

 

15. Om ravi lOchanaaya nama: -- naamaa no.888 occurring in slOkam 94

meaning:one whose eyes are the sun

- he who illuminates moon lightning and varuna

- the 8th 9th and 10th steps in the archiraadhi maargam.

 

b. the moon:

16. Om chandhra amsavE nama: -- naamaa no. 282 occurring in slokam 30

Meaning: who possesses cool effulgence pleasant like moon- rays of moon.

 

17. Om amrutha amsu udhBavaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 284 occurring in slOkam 31

Meaning: the very source of nectar rayed moon

 

18. Om sOmaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 507 occurring in slOkam 54

Meaning: lord who is in the moon light form - that which nourishes all the

plants with the essential rasam [sap] for life.

 

c: The stars:

19. Om nakshathra nEmayE nama: -- naamaa no. 441 occurring in slOkam 47

Meaning: he who supports the dynamic movement of all constellation of stars in

the sky - I am moon among the stars - in bhagavath geetha 10 -21

 

20. Om nakshathriNe nama: -- naamaa no. 442 occurring in slOkam 47

Meaning: he who has all the stars

 

d. the lightning:

21. Om pradhyumnaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 646 occurring in slOkam 68

Meaning: He who illumines all souls by his self effulgence - the lightning -

the 3rd vyooha form

 

e. the illumination in general:

22. Om prakaasanaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 275 occurring in slOkam 29

Meaning: he who illuminates all.

 

23. Om prakaasa aathmanE nama: -- naamaa no. 277 occurring in slokam 30

meaning: he of a nature distinctly perceptible to one and all - the effulgent

soul.

 

24. Om gaBhasthi nEmayaE nama: -- naamaa no. 487 occurring in slOkam 52

Meaning: the center of the supreme planetary system.

-Lord with the effulgent discus - the sudharsana chakram.

 

25. Om jyOthi: gaNa eeswaraaya nama: -- naamaa no. 625 occurring in slOkam 66

meaning: lord of hosts of ever effulgent deities - lord of luminaries in the

cosmos.

 

26. Om archish mathe nama: -- naamaa no. 639 occurring in slOkam 68

Meaning: who possesses unique effulgence - unique illumination.

 

27. Om mahaa thEjaaya nama: -- naama no. 678 occurring in slokam 72

meaning: of great resplendence - extremely effulgent

 

28. Om dheeptha moorthayE nama: -- naamaa no.724 occurring in slokam 77

meaning: he who has an resplendent form or whose form is effulgent.

 

29. Om dhyuthi Dharaaya nama: -- naamaa no 764 occurring in slOkam 81

Meaning: who bears effulgent form - who bears majesty.

 

30. Om saptha Edhaaya nama: - naamaa 832 occurring in slokam 89

meaning: who receives oblations in holy fires form with seven kinds of twigs as

fuels.

The seven effulgent flames.

 

31. Om jyOthishE nama: -- naamaa no. 881 occurring in slokam 94

Meaning: the effulgent with his own inherent light - by his light all are

illumined.
