In Sri shOdasa aayuDha sthOthram of sri swami Desikan, the following weapons figure. 1. thigiri 2. mazhu 3. eetti- spear 4. thaNdu - a thick stick 5. angusam - the small tool used by elephant carer. 6. agni roopa aayuDham - discus emitting fire 7. vaaL - sword 8. vEl - another or modified spear 9. sankham - conch 10. vil - bow 11. paasam - a rope like weapon 12. kalappai - plough 13. vajraayudham 14. gaDhai - mace 15. ulakkai 16. thrisoolam That is why this sthOthram is also called 16 weapon sthOthram. [since I am not able to give equivalents for the others, I leave it to bhakthaas to add english equivalents]. You can see from the following naamaas that all 16 weapons are not finding a place in SVSN, whereas one extra weapon like 4 large teeth is finding a place. a. dhanu: - the bow: 1. Om DhanvinE nama: -- naamaa no. 77 occurring in slOkam 9 Meaning: he who weilds the bow named saarnga 2. Om su DhanvanE nama: -- naamaa no. 572 occurring in slOkam 61 Meaning: who weilds the splendid bow saarnga. 3. Om Dhanu: Dharaaya nama: -- naamaa no 861 occurring in slOkam 92 Meaning: who weilds the bow saarngam. 4. Om saarnga DhanvanE nama: -- naamaa no. 996 occurring in slOkam 107 Meaning: he who sports the all powerful bow called saarnga - aims with the unerring bow saarnga. b. the chakra - wheel 5. Om su dharsanaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 418 occurring in slOkam 45 Meaning: one who has pleasing and delightful appearance. Also who holds the discus sudharsana. 6. Om gaBhasthi nEmayE nama: -- naamaa no. 487 occurring in slOkam 52 Meaning: he with an effulgent discus. 7. Om chakriNE nama: -- naamaa no. 908 occurring in slOkam 97 Also naamaa no. 995 occurring in slOkam 107 Meaning: one who carries the all powerful discus sudharsana. 8. Om ratha anga paaNayE nama: -- naamaa no. 998 occurring in slOkam 107 meaning: one who has the wheel in his hands [wheel which is the moving part of the part- hence ratha angam] c. the wheel or discus and mace: 9. Om chakra gadhaa Dharaaya nama: naamaa no 550 occurring in slOkam 58 Meaning: bearer of holy discus and mace. d. the mace : 10. Om gadhaa Dharaaya nama: -- naamaa no 997 occurring in slOkam 107 Meaning: he who holds the divine mace named koumOdhakee. e. other weapons: 11. Om chathu: dhamshtraaya nama: -- naamaa no. 141 occurring in slokam 15 meaning: one who has four large teeth in his narasimha avathaaram [used as a weapon in killing hiranyakasibu]. 12. Om hala aayudhaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 567 occurring in slOkam 60 Meaning: one who holds the plough as his weapon. 13. Om khaNda parasavE nama: -- naamaa no. 573 occurring in slOkam 61 Meaning: he who weilds the broken axe - in parasu raama incarnation. 14. Om sarva sasthra Bhruthaam varaaya nama: -- naamaa 765 occurring in slokam 81 meaning: best of those weilding all types of weapons. 15. Om sankha BhruthE nama: -- naamaa no 993 occurring in slOkam 107 Meaning: one who bears the divine conch paancha janyam. 16. Om nandhakinE nama: -- naamaa no. 994 occurring in slOkam 107 Meaning: one who weilds the sword called nandhaka 17. Om sarva pra haraNa aayuDhaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 1000 occurring in slOkam 107 Meaning: he who has all the weapons that act against evil for all kinds of assault and fight.
