Guest guest
DEAR FRIENDS, I HAVE A QUESTION FOR ALL. WHY DO WE HAVE IYER AND IYENGARS AS SUB SECTS IN BRAHMINS/HINDUISM,ONLY IN TAMILNAD. THE SAME IS NOT THERE IN KERALA. HERE ALL GODS ARE WORSHIPPED BY BRAHMINS.THERE IS NO SUBSECTS. NARAYANA BHATTATHRI WHO SANG NARAYANEEYAM WAS AN EXPONENT OF POORVA MEEMANSA,WHICH IS ADVAITA.HE REALISED GOD IN HUMAN FORM.DO WE HAVE TO TEACH THE DIFFERENT PHILOSOPHY TO OUR CHILDREN.CAN'T WE MAKE THEM AS ONE BY SAYING ALL GODS ARE EQAL AND SAME. Guest guest
Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha Dear Shri Vaidyanathan, Though I am tempted to reply to this, I would still reserve my comments and expect the learned scholars of this group to answer your question with references to the Poorvacharya Granthams. I just have one comment. I guess Purva Mimamsa is the Karma Kandam and is not Advaita. The whole philosophical part of the Vedas is called as Vedanta(aka VedaShiras, Upanishad, Uttara Mimamsa, Brahma Kandam), though a little of the Karma Kanda also adds to these philosophical views. Karma Kandam deals only with the religion(the discipline, general rules on how to live a peaceful life based on the nature of people) whilst Brahma Kandam deals with the philosophy/spirituality i.e it contains thought provoking discussions and inferences on the existence, swaroopam(nature/attributes) and the swabhavam(behaviour) of the Supreme Being(Iswaran) and his relationship with his creations(chith, achith). In fact, to my knowledge, the Advaita philosophy completely ignores the Karma Kandam under the name of "Bheda Sruthi" (why so? is left to all to find out). My apologies in case I had mis-understood your statements. Consequently, to seek out any kind of unity between these two communities under some sort of Brahminical umbrella would be of great injustice to the thousands of devptees from other communities who also firmly allign themselves with Sri Ramanuja and His Teachings. Regarding the unity of gods, it should be noted that contrary to popular belief, proper followers of the Vedic texts, irrespective of the philosophical base on which they base their practices, understand that there is only One Supreme Truth, One Supreme Good, One God, Sriman Narayana, with all the other Deities being expressions of His Loving Hand acting in this world. I am of the opinion that this is the reason why Sri Narayana Bhattathri and the Brahmins of Kerala are so fond of Sri Krishna and Sri Narayanaeeyam in which He is so beautifully adored. Indeed, I am told that even Sri Adi Sankara, whose philosophy did not encourage the idea of a Personal Concept of Divinity, was of the belief that the Truest Form of Saguna Brahman is Sriman Narayana. Consequently, by teaching our children that all gods are one, that Siva, Vishnu and Brahma are the same, would contradict the very Eternal Truth that defines us. I hope this helps in addressing your question. adiyEn rAmAnuja dAsAnu dAsan Mohan
Guest guest
Dear members, I do not see anything wrong in asking our children in following the practices applicable to their sect. If born as an Iyer or Iyengar , then it is the duty of the parents to teach them the worship methods applicable to the sect to which they belong. We should also tell them about our Acharyas. After all there is beauty only in diversity. But there should be unity in diversity. Iyengar sect is very much a minority community in TN except that there is concentration inplaces like Srirangam, Kumbakonam, Kanchi etc. Every effort should be made to preserve this sect and teach our children about the philosophy. Otherwise , it will become extinct like what the Parsi community is facing today. All these are prasadam of The Lord; we should preserve these ideologies. The word " Nara"( man) has come from " Narayana" . Whether one is Iyer or Iyengar we can tell the child that Lord Sreeman Narayana is the protector of this World and worship we do to Siva or Ganesha goes to Him. I must say that , I am no where near compared to other exponents in this group, this attempt is just an inspiration.
