Dear Bhaagavathaas,

I just started reading Valmiki Raamayanam verse by verse with translation in

kannada. It is amazing piece of kaavyam. Similies abound. It is simple and

lucid.

I also came to know many things for the first time and many contrary to the

popular

narrations elswhere. I am in the middle of Ayodhyakhaandam.

Raama is clearly stated as avatara of Vishnu right in the beginning it self.

The best prostitutes were sent to bring rishyashringa, so that he may help

in performing the putrakaameshti yagam (not that Dasharatha went to his

ashrama and invited him).

Ahalya knew very well that it was indeed Indra, although he had disguised

as Goutama maharshi. She also aspired to have an affair with Indra.

Goutama did not curse an innoscent Ahalya. He also did not curse her to turn

into a stone (popular version) rather cursed her to reside their invisibly,

until that time Rama arrives there.

As Rama, Sita and Laskhmana enter the forest, Lakshmana kills a pig and

three different species of deer which they consume. When they are crossing

Ganga river, sita offers puja to Ganga and prays for their safe return. In

return she pledges to give lakhs of cows to Brahmanas, as well as offer

hundreds of kalasha of suraapaanam (booze) and plenty of meat as offering to

ganga. As Lakshmana builds parnakuti in Chitrakutam, Rama orders him to kill

a deer and prepare the meat for vasthu puja, vasthu bali etc.

These may help to answer some of the questions raised by bhagavathaas.
