I believed that Kannan stood for Kaar Vannan meaning someone who's skin

color is that of the color of clouds which is black. In Tamil literature

clouds are usually mentioned for their darkness( Kaar Mugil).

Shyam Sundar, Kannan ... I see a relation.

Maybe I am not right.

This is speculation as well.. Having been brought up in north India, I had

always believed that the name Kannan ,while meaningful in itself, was

borrowed from what Braj-vasis lovingly called (and still call) our

Kannan--Kanahaiyaa or Kaanha. This still doesn't explain why they called

him that though. Maybe it was a commonly used "pet-name" for the name

Krishna.
