Dear sree vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

In post 1 to 4, we saw how sree vaalmeeki maharishi and king dhasaratha

described the guNangaL - various charecteristics of sree raamaa. As continuation

of posts 5 and 6, in this post also we will continue the study of raama gunam

description by the assembled kings, ministers and people of ayOdhyaa [as

described by sri vaalmeeki maharishi in his raamaayaNam].

 

vyasanEshu manushyaaNaam bhrusham bhavathi du:khitha: || 2-2-40

[balance of slokam 40, part already seen in previous post]

utsavEshu cha sarvEshu pithEva parithushyathi | [part of slokam 41]

 

brusam du:kitha: Bhavathi = feels very sad,

vyasanEshu = in troubles,

manushyaaNaam = of men,

 

sarvEshu = in all,

utsavEshu = celebrations,

pithaa iva = like father.

pari thushyathi = feels delighted,

 

Meaning: Rama feels very sad towards afflictions of men; and feels delighted in

all functions celebrated by people on the occasions of child birth and the like,

just as their own father does."

 

sathyavaadhee mahEshvaasO vrudhDha sEvee jithEndhriya: || 2-2-41

smitha poorva aBhibhaashee cha Dharmam sarvaathmanaa aasritha: | part of slokam

sathyavaadhee = speaker of truth only,

mahEshvaasa: = He who is having the great bow,

vrudhdha sEvee = he who serves elders,

jithEndhriya: = he whose senses are defeated,

smitha poorva aBhiBhaashee cha = he who smiles before speaking,

Dharmam aasritha: = He who takes shelter of righteousness,

sarva aathmanaa = in all ways.

 

Meaning: "Rama speaks only truth. He is a great hero. He serves elders. He kept

the senses under control. Rama, who talks smilingly, protects righteousness in

all ways."

 

samyag yOkthaa srEyasaam cha na vigruhya kathaa ruchi: || 2-2-42

uththarOththarayukthou cha vakthaa vaachaspathir yathaa | part of slokam 43

 

yOkthaa srEyasaam = who procures benefits,

samyak = in good manner,

na kathaa ruchi: = not interested in talks,

vigruhya = by quarreling,

vakthaa = orator,

vaachaspathir yathaa = like Brihaspati,

uththara uththara yukthou cha = by replies and rejoinders.

 

Meaning: Rama purchases benefits in good manner. He is not interested in

wrangling talks. He is an orator like Brihaspati by his replies and rejoinders.

 

suBhroor aayatha thaamra aksha: saakshaath vishNu: iva svayam || 2-2-43

raamO lOka aBhiraamO~yam sourya veerya paraakramai: | part of slokam 44

 

ayam = this,

raama: = Rama,

lOka aBhiraama: = who enchants the world,

suBhroo: = with beautiful eyebrows,

aayatha thaamra aksha: = with broad and red eyes,

svayam = himself,

saakshaath = absolutely,

vishNu: iva = like VishNu,

sourya veerya paraakramai: = in strength, heroism and valour.

 

Meaning: "Rama, who enchants the world, has beautiful eyebrows. He has red and

broad eyes. He is absolutely like the God Vishnu himself in strength, heroism

and valour."

 

prajaa paalana thathvajna: na raagOpahathEndhriya: || 2-2-44

sakthyaas thrailOkyamapi EkO bhokthum kim nu maheem imaam | part of slokam 45

 

prajaa paalana thathvajna: = knew the ins and outs of public administration,

na raaga upahatha indhriya: = person whose senses are not hit by passion,

sakthya: = capable of,

bhOkthum = enjoying,

thrai lOkyam api = even three worlds,

eka: = alone,

kim nu = why to speak of ,

imaam = this,

maheem = earth.

 

Meaning: "He knew the ins and outs of public administration. His senses are not

afflicted by passion. He is capable of administering not only earth, but also

the three worlds."

 

naa~asya krODha: prasaadhas cha nirarthO~sthi kadhaachana || 2-2-45

hanthyEva niyamaadh vadhyaan avadhyE cha na kupyathi | part of slokam 46

 

asya = his,

krODha: = anger,

prasaadhas cha = and mercy,

kadaachana = at anytime,

naasthi = not,

nirarthaka: = useless,

hanthyEva = kills certainly,

vadhyaan = worthy of slaying,

niyamaath = as per rules,

na kupyathi = not enraged at,

avadhyE = those not worthy of slaying.

 

Meaning: "Rama's anger or mercy is not arbitrary at any time. He kills those who

are to be slain as per rules. He is not angered at innocent."

 

yunakthyarthhai: prahrustascha tham asou yathra thushyathi || 2-2-46

saanthai: sarva prajaa kaanthai: preethi sanjananair nruNaam |

guNair viruruchE raamO dheeptha: soorya iva amsuBhi: || 2-2-47

 

asou = this Rama,

yunakthi = bestows,

arthhai: = wealth,

tham = to those,

yathra = with whom,

thushyathi = he is satisfied,

soorya: iva = as the sun,

dheeptha: = shines,

amsuBhi: = by his rays,

raama: = Rama,

viruruchE = shone,

guNai: = by qualities,

saanthai: = which are peaceful,

sarva prajaa kaanthai: = which are enchanting to the entire people,

preethi jananai: = which create delight,

nruNaam = to humans.

 

Meaning: "He gladly bestows wealth to those, with whom, he is satisfied. As the

sun shines by his rays, Rama shines by his qualities that are peaceful, which

are enchanting and delightful to all men."

 

tham Evam guNa sampannam raamam sathya paraakramam |

lOka paala upamam naathham akaamayatha mEDhinee || 2-2-48

 

mEDhinee = the earth,

akaamayatha = desires,

raamam = raama,

Evam guNa sampannam = who is endowed with this wealth of virtues,

sathya paraakramam = who has true valour,

lOka paala upamam = equal to presiding deities like dhEvEndhra,

naathham = as the lord.

 

Meaning: "All people desire Rama, who is endowed with this kind of wealth of

qualities, who has true valour, who is equal to presiding deities like

dhEvEndhra, to be their lord."

 

vathsa: srEyasi jaathasthE dhistyaa~sou thava raaghava |

dhistyaa puthra guNair yukthO maareecha iva kasyapa: || 2-2-49

 

raaghava = oh! king Dasaratha,

asou = this Rama,

jaatha: = is born,

thE = to you,

vathsa: = as son,

thava dhishtyaa = by your fortune,

yuktha: puthra guNai: = having virtues befitting a son,

kasyapa: iva = like kasyapa,

maareecha: = the son of Mareecha.

 

Meaning: "Oh king dhasaratha! raama is born to you as a son, because of your

good fortune, for the welfare of this world . He has all the virtues befitting

of a son, like Kasyapa, the son of Mareecha."

 

Now to list the guNams of raama as stated by people of ayOdhyaa -

1. manushyEshu vyasanEshu brusam du:kitha: Bhavathi = feels very sad in troubles

of men,

2. pithaa iva sarvEshu utsavEshu pari thushyathi = feels delighted in all

celebrations like father.

3. sathyavaadhee = speaker of truth only

4. mahaa ishu aasa: = is having great bow,

5. vrudhdha sEvee = serves elders,

6. jithEndhriya: = he whose senses are defeated or well controlled,

7. smitha poorva aBhiBhaashee = he who smiles before speaking,

8. sarva aathmanaa Dharmam aasritha: = He who takes shelter of righteousness in

all ways.

9. samyak shrEyasaam yOkthaa = who procures benefits in good manner,

10. vigruhya na kathaa ruchi: = not interested in talks by quarreling,

11. uththara uththara yukthou vaachaspathir yathaa vakthaa = orator like

Brihaspati by replies and rejoinders

12. lOka aBhiraama: = who enchants the world,

13. subhroo: = has beautiful eyebrows,

14. aayatha thaamra aksha: = with broad and red eyes,

15. saakshaath vishNu: iva sourya veerya paraakramai: = like VishNu in

strength, heroism and valour absolutely.

16. prajaa paalana thathvajna: = knew the ins and outs of public administration,

17. na raaga upahatha indhriya: = person whose senses are not hit by passion,

18. thrai lOkyam api eka: bhOkthum sakthya: = capable of enjoying even three

worlds alone,

19. kadaachana asya krodha: prasaadhas cha nirarthaka: naasthi = at anytime

his anger and mercy are not useless

20. hanthya Eva niyamaath vadhyaan = kills those certainly worthy of slaying as

per rules,

21. avadhyE na kupyathi = not enraged at those not worthy of slaying.

22. arthhai: yunakthi tham yathra thushyathi = bestows wealth to those with whom

he is satisfied,

23. soorya: amsuBhi: dheeptha raama: guNai: viruruchE = as the sun shines by his

rays raama shone by qualities

24. saanthai: guNai: viruruchE = shone with peaceful character

25. sarva prajaa kaanthai: viruruchE = shone by charater which are enchanting to

entire people,

26. nruNaam preethi jananai: viruruchE = shone by charater which create delight

to humans.

27. mEDhinee raamam naathham [ithi] akaamayatha = the earth desires raama as her

lord

28. guNa sampanna: = is endowed with this wealth of virtues,

29. sathya paraakrama: = has true valour,

30. lOka paala upama: = equal to presiding deities like dhEvEndhra,

31. maareechasya kasyapa: iva yuktha: puthra raama: guNair = raama has virtues

befitting a son like kasyapa the son of Mareecha.

 

Dear bhakthaas,

Sorry, I am not able to accommodate the most important question in this post

also, because of the length constraint. In the next post we will definitely have
